I am 8 weeks pregnant and I can’t stop eating. I was really sick and hungry with my first child but this is a whole other thing. I have to eat every two hours even overnight. It’s only midday and I’ve already eaten two bananas, an apple, two scrambled eggs, a bowl of porridge, a yoghurt, an avocado with cottage cheese and a whole pizza with extra toppings. And that doesn’t include the food I had to get up to eat overnight. And I’m still hungry. I’ve been drinking lots as well to make sure it’s not dehydration. I’m trying to eat the most nourishing foods I can stomach. Can this be normal? My symptoms started earlier this time and I’m bed bound from the nausea and exhaustion. Doesn’t it seem like this had to be a multiple pregnancy? There are no twins on either side but I am late 30s... it’s so frustrating to have to wait another month to find out. Any thoughts? I know it’s most likely to be a singleton pregnancy but what could explain this extreme hunger? I should mention I have MS but I’m not sure that’s the issue.

I remember this with both pgs and neither was twins. Your body wants to stock up on food, and it can stop you feeling sick, so you end up constantly eating. Though of course it could be multiples, I don't think this mean it is.

Once when I was about 9wks pg I was at a restaurant and we were waiting for our order, and of course unlike at home I couldn't grab a snack. I was SO HUNGRY I thought I was going to faint. I asked a waiter (politely) for some bread as soon as possible as I was feeling a bit faint, and he said yes but then forgot as they do. I wasn't angry but I was so desperate I started crying and went and tracked him down wailing "I REALLY need that bread..." Poor man! Blush

I think most private scan clinics offer early reassurance scans, from about 6-8 weeks. that's what I'd do. but I am very impatient Grin

Thanks but I can’t really afford a private scan :(

Are you taking prednisone for your MS? I took pred in pregnancy and felt ravenous all the time.

Cornberry · 21/09/2019 15:21

MrsHardbroom no I’m not on any meds. My main symptoms are sever digestive issues though and MS is an illness of deficiency so maybe that’s it. Just hoping for twins to make the most out of this misery!

Could be just how you are this time, pregnancy is hard, I've suspected twins every time due to exhaustion and nausea/vomiting and been wrong every time. Might be worth an early check for gestational diabetes though, I had it in one pregnancy and was fucking starving (and eating) the whole way through. I got massive. Baby was fine though and I lost the weight afterwards (although am fat again now).

ismellbabies eek thanks, I was wondering about that. I will speak to the doctor.

I don't think you can draw any conclusions from your symptoms. I'm 31 weeks pregnant with twins and haven't experienced the kind of hunger you've described at any point during my pregnancy; plus my other pregnancy symptoms have actually been a lot more mild than they were with my singleton (sickness has been WAY better, I've been less tired, had fewer cramps, etc)

Cornberry · 21/09/2019 19:59

powerslidepanda interesting. Thanks. And congratulations!

Morning sickness is an illness of deficiency? Could you say more about that? Is there any evidence for it?

Cornberry · 21/09/2019 20:23

jenniferjane I meant MS is a disease of deficiency, but there are reports that morning sickness is made worse by low magnesium and b vitamins and certain minerals.

I’m 18 weeks with twins and haven’t experienced this; I’ve definitely been hungrier but not at this level! I was also on a steroid for the first trimester too which made me hungrier. The only thing that made it obvious it was twins for me was that I had a small bump at 8 weeks which rapidly grew; I was in maternity leggings at 10 weeks pregnant. Only way to find out of course is a scan!

BikeRunSki · 21/09/2019 20:54

I had an very early scan on the NHS at 6 weeks due to suspected twins (I had hyperemisis). I’m wasn’t twins, but yiu May be refered for an early scan if there is reason to suspect twins.
