Distance cot from radiator?

Trying to figure out how to fit our next to me cot in our room. I know you can’t have a cot directly next to a radiator- is a distance of about 0.5m safe? I wouldn’t usually have the radiator turned to full blast. Husband thinks it’s fine but I’d rather check!

I think that is too close. We had similar set up and just put radiator off

I was thinking about it and the way it would be arranged would mean the foot of the cot is level with the end of the radiator (0.5m away) , so length of cot is not along radiator. We don’t have the radiator on overnight really so baby wouldn’t be in the cot when it’s hot, but maybe when it’s cooling down. Does this sound more reasonable?

Our next to me has to be pretty close to our radiator! Never even thought about it to be honest, parent of the year over here! .. I do have the radiators very low or off in our bedroom as I have a really thick duvet!

If you don’t have them on overnight, I can’t really see the issue? Maybe just be cautious of when they come on in the morning. Ours come on for 6.30 as we get up & on maternity, we’d easily be in bed until 8ish! Especially if my daughter had done a 5am feed. We’d both go back to sleep for 2-3 hours! Just keep the bedroom radiator low and whack up the bathroom one for your other half going out to work!

What’s the layout of the room, is there any way the cot can go on the other side of the bed?

SRK16 · 20/09/2019 14:40

It could do but means swapping sides with my husband- which we can do obviously but if we don’t need to would prefer not to. I’m going to remeasure this weekend to see if there’s another option.

I'm pretty sure the safe sleep guidelines advise against the cot being near a radiator. I'd be especially cautious re a newborn overheating so wouldn't want the next2me that close to the radiator if there's warmth coming off it.

DD started off next to the radiator as she was born in May so it was off altogether for the first few months. When Autumn came I rearranged everything to put her on the other side of the room.

At 18m she went into her own room and, being the box room, there's no choice but her cot being near the radiator so I've turned the radiator down to 2. Even at that level I wouldn't have been happy with her sleeping next to it as a young baby.

I would move the bed over and swap sides rather than put the cot by the radiator.
We swapped sides when my DD was little and got used to it really quickly, in fact we never swapped back!

Turn the radiator off to be safe.

The recommended sleeping room temp for a baby is 16-20c .
NHS says 18 here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/reducing-risk-cot-death/

You could buy a room thermometer that records highs and low and stick it where the cot will go if you are worried.

I live in a cold drafty old house so pointless trying to keep it warm, thick duvets and minimal heating. I have always found the kids sleep much better when it is cold than hot. Now they are older they still kick the duvet off even when I think it is pretty cold.

Just get a gro-egg thermometer or similar and then dress baby appropriately for whatever temperature it is. Our next to me was about a metre from the radiator and I just turned it down if the room got hotter then 21-22 degrees.

The actual position of the radiator doesn’t matter, it’s the temperature in the cot that counts.
