How much weight should you put on during pregnancy?

I ask because I've actually lost about 4lb since finding out I was pregnant - possibly from cutting out the alcohol.

If you have an 8lb baby, should you expect to be carrying 8lb of weight by the time you give birth or more - and if so, how much more? What would be a healthy amount?

About 2 stone I would say in baby and fluid etc, you'll lose at least a stone and a half in the first few weeks post natal in my experience and more will come off with no effort if breastfeeding.

I was told 21 lbs. I b at that by at least another 21 lbs!
Breast feeding did nothing for weight loss for me.

It depends on your starting weight. Women who are overweight and obese are told to keep their weight level (so no gain even when including the baby’s weight) while those who are morbidly obese are often old to lose weight. If you are a normal BMI then most providers would expect gain of about a stone across the pregnancy but wouldn’t be worried if it were less. If you are low BMI then they may refer you for growth scans if they don’t see at least a stone (or more) of gain.

I lost a few kg in the first trimester then didn't gain anything (apart from bump!) until about 27 weeks. I'm now 30 weeks and have gained a stone in total. I was overweight to start with.

For a fairly average weight person I was told 1.5 to 2 stone is normal. I'm bang in the middle of the BMI range and put on 2 stone with all 4 of mine but probably lost a stone within 3 days of giving birth then sweated the rest of the water weight off over the following 6-8 weeks

Put on 50lbs. 40lbs fell off me within 10 weeks post birth then did weightwatchers for final 10lbs.

You have the baby, the placenta, the waters, probably bigger boobs, 50% more blood volume for you (I think it's that high...), maternal fat stores for breastfeeding, perhaps some water retention, it adds up!

I think most weight gain happens in the second half of pregnancy so don't panic if there's not much happening early on.

I’ve been checking this occasionally which works out your starting BMI and adjusts for weight gain each week Smile

We were taught a lb a month for the first 6 months, then a lb a week.
I lost 10lb by the time I was 8 weeks due to HG.

I’m 24 weeks and so far I am at a stone gain. Also no idea what’s normal or not but I think I’ll be told if it’s too much?? I can’t stop eating cake and stuff so it’s no surprise! I only take my car to work on Monday as I work late, rest of the week I walk and hoping to start Aquanatal next week! So I do try and find balance! X

From WebMD:
A woman who was average weight before getting pregnant should gain 25 to 35 pounds after becoming pregnant. Underweight women should gain 28 to 40 pounds. And overweight women may need to gain only 15 to 25 pounds during pregnancy
