To worry I know nothing about babies

I've never been particularly into babies like some people are, although I'm obviously very excited to be having my own! In fact I've only ever held a baby about three times in my life and have no idea how to do it (are you supposed to support the head?!) I've no idea what burping a baby involves and have never changed a nappy.

Does anyone have any tips on good websites or books to read to understand the basics of babycare and is anyone else in the same boat? I'm worried my child will be born and I won't have a clue what to do with it!

I was so clueless about babies, being the first of my friends and a whole generation in my family to have one, that when I was about five months pregnant I weighed out garden ornaments and settled on one the was eight pounds to get an idea of what carrying a baby would be like for a while Blush

Listen, it's going to be fine. It's not like cracking the enigma code. It's relentless but it's very simple and babies are fitted with an awesome crying feedback system to make sure you get it right.

Dont worry, loads of people have no idea but you pick it up quickly :) midwives etc will show you how to hold the baby

Support the head, feed it, change it, clean it jobs a good un

I'm the same, no idea about babies at all. but there are a lot of us and apparently you pick everything up quickly. don't stress about it. the baby will be fine and so will you.

I'm in the same boat and have signed up to an NCT course for this very reason. I think most hospitals run antenatal classes too. Might be a more practical approach than reading a book?

Babies are surprisingly hard to break, all they need is feeding, cleaning and cuddles. You’ll pick up all the rest as you go along!

Chillisauceboss · 18/09/2019 18:37

I know everything about my own baby as you just learn along the way... I still wouldn't know about another one year old as they're all different :)

I'm in the same situation! In fact I've actually avoided babies while struggling with infertility. I'm going to do all the courses and ask for help when I need it. I've read a few lists of things to buy and I haven't got a clue what half of it's for!

Wiltshirelass2019 · 18/09/2019 20:29

Same here, I’m 37 weeks and I know nothing. Haven’t been able to sign up to any courses either because they were all fully booked. I’m just hoping instinct kicks in 😳

My dh had never even held a baby until ds arrived. He became a sahp when ds was 10 weeks old!!
You will be more than fine op.

There are loads of videos on YouTube. Just search for something like "how to take care of a newborn" and within an hour you'll be as ready as anyone! Grin

And don't forget they should teach you newborn care at antenatal classes.

I had nothing to do with babies before my little one was born 8 months ago. One thing I regret is I researched too much when she was born as she was a bad sleeper (still is) but trying all sort and reading too much for me in a state and made things worse.

Trust your instincts, read up on regressions/growth spurts, learn how to swaddle beforehand of that's what you want to do but don't worry you learn lots more along the way

Sign up to NCT and/or ask your hospital or midwife about NHS courses (free). Even with 5 nieces and nephews I'd never changed a nappy until DS was born.
