Went for an early scan - showed no pregnancy - but I've had 8 positive tests?!?

Hi all. I'm desperate for some advice and have been searching through every forum ever today in the hope of getting answers...

I found out last week (11/09) that I was pregnant. I took 5 tests over 3 days all of them were positive. However this last weekend I started to get some dull cramps in my pelvis, almost like stitch. I phoned my midwife and she advised I go to EPAU (early pregnancy assessment) just to rule out anything scary. I went this morning, doctors took two more tests - again positive, then referred me for an internal scan.

The scan showed nothing. And I mean nothing. My womb is empty. The lining is not as they would expect for a pregnancy. They told me two things - one could be that I'm too early to see anything, or, the pregnancy isn't viable, meaning it hasn't taken to my womb (a type of miscarriage). They have ruled out that a miscarriage has already happened or an eptopic so that's good.

Going by my last period (which have been irregular since coming off the pill) I'm 6 weeks. However I believe I'm anywhere between 2.5 - 5 weeks. (Clear blue digital says 1-2) I took a test 5 days prior to that first collection of positives (first day of my missed period - although unreliable) and it was negative, so this to means says its more likely to be earlier in the pregnancy.

The doctor told me take another one in a week and 'go from there' - so unhelpful. And I've been pulling my hair out and falling apart all afternoon. I managed to get my bloods taken this afternoon to have something else to measure this all by so will find out the results of that soon... but in the meantime I wanted to ask any mums / mums to be if they have experienced this and if so what your thoughts are? I took another test this evening and the line is so clear!!!! So strong compared to last week. Attached photos with dates for ref.

Also my boobs hurt and I have no appetite....

I don't know what to think or feel. I can't grieve but I can't be excited??? Any advice appreciated!

Where do you live that you have a midwife and managed to get an early scan at 3 weeks, and not one, but 2 doctors appointments, within the space of 1hr 40mins?

I'm also impressed by this.

Though my SIL had seen her midwife 3 times before a miscarriage at 8 weeks which baffled me a bit. I didn't book in til after then.

mrsf1204 · 17/09/2019 11:26

Teachermats I'm in the South West UK. The two doctors appointment were in the same appointment - he did an initial consultation, sent me for a scan then saw me after the scan to review the results. All part of a walk in drop in centre - I was there from 7am when they opened, got seen at 8:50, left there at about 11am.

The blood test was a walk in drop in centre in the afternoon following a duty dr call.

All in all I wish I had ignored the pain I was having and not gone through any of what I did yesterday. It was horrendous for my mental health.

Then again this is my first pregnancy and the pain I was having was a bit scary. It's all new - I don't know what's what.

Those telling me to calm down, I am trying believe me. But when you already suffer with anxiety and the dr has put fear in me to get tested in the first place it's all a bit daunting - if it were up to me I wouldn't have gone yesterday.

I had a midwife at 5 weeks from last period. That was my booking app.
(I filled a form out online at 4 weeks and booked in the next)
My scan was sent out the week after but that wasn't until I was 12 weeks.

I've only had early scans with my son (my last comment obvs explains why)
My 2nd pregnancy I was booked in later and scan at 13 weeks.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 17/09/2019 11:31

There is a reason why hospitals won't give reassurance scans to the over anxious as they take up valuable time and resources

You said you haven't had much pain and only slight spotting??? Far far to early to see anything and quite honestly is wasting NHS time as they're really isn't anything they can do at this stage

Sorry if that sounds harsh but you'll really just need to wait and see what happens in the next few days or pay privately for a reassurance scan

SmileCheese · 17/09/2019 11:38

The doctor hasn't put the fear into you, he's just doing his job. Is there someone you can talk to about your anxiety in real life? If you are pregnant then the next 8 months are going to be full of stressful days and all mums to be worry about the little things like twinges or bump size. However, if you have anxiety this is likely to be magnified 10 fold and you really will need someone to talk to about how you are feeling and how the pregnancy is affecting you.

mrsf1204 · 17/09/2019 11:39

Itwasalovelydream ...

Very harsh considering if you read my comments you'll see I was TOLD to go be assessed, I didn't choose to be.....

I already see someone yes.

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted
I had reassurance scans all the way through my 1st pregnancy because of my high anxiety.

mrsf1204 · 17/09/2019 11:48

Itwasalladream ....

Also I phoned the midwife and explained my slight pains, explained how it was slight and not awful and how I had not had any bleeding bar the pale pink when I wiped and it was THEM who insisted I get checked out. I even said I didn't think I was far enough along and that I was happy to leave it.... I haven't chosen to 'waste the NHS time' .... they did?!

I think you should read back through all the comments and consider the mental health of someone who hasn't been pregnant before and who struggles with anxiety anyway before making such harsh comments....

I'm sure anyone who hasn't been pregnant before can back me up that they have their concerns and questions early on. Whether they are big or small why does it matter?

@mrsf1204

Hope you're alright lovely! I've read through all this. Of course you would have 1 million questions being a first timer! I'm not even pregnant yet (trying first time) and I ask 1 million and 1 questions 😂..

By the sounds of it it must be early for you to scan. Great news about all these tests being positive. I really hope it works out for you (even though you said you wasn't planning it until end of year) but sounds like you're clearly very excited.

Keep us posted x

Ginandtonic31 · 17/09/2019 11:54

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted I had 3 reassurance scans before I was 10 weeks and a trip to A&E at the insistence of medical professionals. We aren't all wasting NHS time, we are following medical advice! I was told any brown blood at all they wanted to see me for a scan ASAP and if it turned bright red and heavy I needed to go to A&E. I work in the NHS and there's much worse wasting time than using a service the way it was intended based on medical advice.

mrsf1204 · 17/09/2019 11:55

Thanks Seli!

Fingers crossed. We were trying (end of the year wasn't me Smile) have been for 3 months so I am very excited deep down - I just don't want to get too carried away!

Best wishes to you too x

@mrsf1204 oh!! Sorry! Read way too many comments clearly mixing people up lol!

All the best to you!!! I'm only 2po (5month) so a little while to go! AF better not arrive!

Xx

Please try to calm down as stress is not good in pregnancy. Hope you get a positive confirmation soon.

mistermagpie · 17/09/2019 13:45

Sounds to me like you are three weeks pregnant and that's why they couldn't see anything. Going by your last period is a stupid policy in my opinion, because it doesn't account for people with unusually long or short cycles.

You are just going to have to wait it out but try to stay calm if you can because the time sure does drag during the first trimester and finding out so early won't help that.

mrsf1204 · 17/09/2019 13:59

Mister I totally agree that the last day period tracking is horrendous if you have even slightly abnormal cycles, which mine have been since coming off the pill - anything between 28-36 days. I think I ovulated late last month so I'm not surprised. Just goes to show I should trust my instincts!

Thanks for all the response on my post. I'll keep you all posted over the next few weeks - fingers crossed! Smile

Just an update for you -

My tests are coming back stronger than ever as positive and the digital one has now moved on to 2/3 weeks compared to last weeks 1/2. My boobs are killing and I have awful back ache - at the moment (touch wood) everything looks promising. I'm just writing on Monday as it being all too early and trusting my instincts. Also - Blood results come back tomorrow, which they will monitor from there.

So I'm just going to see how it goes, and if I'm still testing positive in a week I'll rebook my booking in appointment and just stick to that unless anything untoward happens to cause me to go to EPAU.

All in all I'm feeling much calmer, more positive and chilled and more excepting of the wait which for me is hard I tell you!

Sad I had a rough experience Monday, but with this being a first time for me I just didn't know what was going on. Put it all down to experience I guess and move on.

Fingers crossed everything stays on track 💞

Oh that sounds really positive!!!! 😍

SaltySeaBird · 18/09/2019 19:14

I was scanned at 5 weeks and it came back as nothing at all, no sign of anything. A week later there was a heart beating away. That little heartbeat is my very lively DS now!

It’s just too early.

mrsf1204 · 18/09/2019 21:27

@SaltySeaBird oh that's reassuring to hear! Thank you! The drs were pretty harsh about the whole thing to be honest and I had to keep saying I'm not far enough along I'm not even 3 weeks and they just kept saying about my last period and I was like - I know - but it physically isn't possible for me to be further than 4 weeks 😂😂 massive difference compared to my period which would make me now 8 weeks!!! Hence why they wanted to see me. Irregular periods and late ovulation can throw the whole last date of period tracking thing out the window!

I’m going through a similar thing at the moment. Last period at the beginning of August and I’ve had positive tests for a couple of weeks but went in to the EPU last week with pain in one side and they found nothing on the scan. I should have been 6 weeks but my hCG levels were also very low (around 120). Ive has scans and bloods almost every day since (frustratingly alternating days for each) due to some free fluid (blood) inside and the unknown location of the baby and today they saw a little egg sac!!

I still have quite a bit of constant one sided pain but my hCG levels are increasing - still very low, only 500... so they can see something before 1500! The doctor is right, it really is just a waiting game.

Starlight84 · 18/09/2019 23:00

@mrsf1204i hope everything works out for you! Hopefully you feel calmer now and can just see what happens but everything crossed for you xx

mrsf1204 · 19/09/2019 09:39

Another update for you all. Dr phoned this morning my bloods on Monday were 1185 so definitely pregnant, but she said that it is very rare to see anything on a scan until they are 1500 and even then they recommend waiting until 2000, she's phoning EPAU today, I'll hear back in a couple of hours about next steps but likely another blood test in a week and then scan again if they are increasing.

I'm hoping it was just too early to see anything...

good luck OP

at the EPU myself in the morning as i should be 6 weeks, but have been having some pain in my side.

terrified it'll show nothing

PrimroseH · 19/09/2019 17:53

Hi guys,

I'm in the same boat. I had my LMP end of July and got my BFP 2 weeks ago. I had an early scan today which would have made me 8 weeks. But during the scan there was only gestational/yolk sac and no fetal pole. They said I'm probably 4-5 week. Was really scary as I was hoping to see a heart beat. But as I have PCOS and irregular periods I'm hoping that LMP is just inaccurate. It's so confusing! I now have to wait 2 weeks to have another scan!! I'm also going to be feeling the anxiety during the wait!
