you don't need soap for a newborn
plain water is better

Nemo2007 · 10/08/2007 10:11

for a newborn would just use warm water, tend not to need anything else really. At least just while their skin is adjusting.

phdlife · 10/08/2007 10:13

also, they don't need to be washed every day to start with. except their heads and bottoms.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 10/08/2007 10:13

you don't even have to bath them in the first few weeks or so - just "top and tail" them

fawkeoff · 10/08/2007 10:14

yeah waters best.....other things take natural moisture and oils out of their skin

sarahloumadam · 10/08/2007 10:19

What about baby wipes when they have done the biz?

DaisyMOO · 10/08/2007 10:20

You also don't need to bathe them every day and it is probably better for their skin if you don't. What are you planning on use the oil for or am I being dense?!

gringottsgoblin · 10/08/2007 10:20

mine didnt get on well with baby wipes, turned their bottoms red (so i assume sore). stick with cotton wool/water for a couple of weeks

Nbg · 10/08/2007 10:21

I didnt bath my ds for about 2 weeks.
Good job really as he had really dry skin.

IntergalacticWalrus · 10/08/2007 10:23

Agree plain water is best.

Don't mask that lovely newborn smell with baby bath

We still don;t use anything in the basth for DS1 who is 2.8 (but that's because he has eczema) and he still comes out clean. We just use a gentle shampoo on his hair, which is wuite thick and curly. DS1 just gets washed in plain water.

I don;pt tend tio use baby wuipes either, unless we are out. I got a cheapo towel and cut it into pieces, and use it wil plain water to wash thier arses (save a bloodty fortune too)

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 10/08/2007 10:24

you should use cotton wool and warm water for their bots when they are tiny.NOT wipes.

Wilkie · 10/08/2007 10:29

Plain water - I personally used non-fragranced wipes (shop's own brand fine).

I bathed DS as part of his night time routine although you don't have to bath them every day, both me and DS found it relaxing.

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 12:26

Re: Baby wipes. I had read that cotton wool and water was best and when I was in hospital the first thing the midwife asked me was "where are your wipes", I had only taken in cotton wool.

crokky · 10/08/2007 12:37

I didn't bath mine for 2 weeks after birth and then after that, only every 1-2 weeks. It just isn't necessary at that stage. Just cotton wool pads (it can be easier if you use the cotton wool pads that are for makeup removal) and water for the nappy area.

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 12:38

Crokky - that is a good idea..about the make up pads.

kyala · 10/08/2007 13:32

We used plain water first time round with olive oil for DD's cradle cap, works a treat but she smelt quite strongly of it, (not that we cared what our new baby smelled of awwwww)

kyala · 10/08/2007 13:34

Also, as with crokky, we used cotton wool pads, DH actually got hooked on buying them so much that we have enough for a couple of months use this time too (DD is now 2 LOL)
