Hiccups

I’m 38 weeks on Tuesday and for past week the baby has had hiccups so much more often than I have noticed before. I noticed today it has been 3 times so far and this evening it happened as soon as I had finished dinner. Everything online says it is fine but can also be a sign of a problem!

Anyone had this and got clear response from dr or midwife? I don’t know if I should be contacting midwife.

Thanks so much!

I had it multiple times a day for weeks on end. My midwife was completely unphased and said it’s pretty normal. It seems to have slowed down now I’m over 37 weeks

Sorry no words of advice, but I was just googling the same thing. I’m a good few weeks behind you, but baby has had at least 4 lots of hiccups today and when in bed last night. Looking forward to some replies to your question.

It's fine and more than likely will continue when the baby is out if it's like mine lol.

Cashew1 · 14/09/2019 21:32

Normal! My 9 month old still has them all the time if I make her laugh too much

Wolfiefan · 14/09/2019 21:36

Isn’t it something to do with them preparing to breathe out of the womb? Something to do with the diaphragm or something? My first had them LOTS!

Hello! I’m 39 weeks tomorrow and sometimes baby gets them 3 times a day. I asked midwife a few days ago she said nothing to worry about and no set number they shouldn’t be going over. It’s sometimes where they swallow amniotic fluid. Xx

My first had hiccups in utero lots, it's such a weird feeling.

Starlive23 · 14/09/2019 22:41

I had this so much during the later stages of pregnancy and mentioned it to my MW who said it was all totally normal, and baby was completely normal and healthy so I guess she was right!

HippyChickMama · 14/09/2019 22:45

Dd had hiccups a lot in utero and suffered from them a lot for the first few weeks after she was born. She is now a healthy 6 year old and rarely has them but does tend to gulp drinks.

Thanks so much everyone! I read the “it could mean the cord is restricted” and have worried but will try and enjoy now! He’s just a guzzler I guess!

Your like me 😩 google is not always our friend !! I’m really trying to stay away from it 🤭 xx

Wolfiefan · 15/09/2019 09:05

Definitely stay away from Google but if you’re concerned about anything then do get it checked out. No harm asking a midwife.

TriciaMcMillan · 15/09/2019 09:12

Both mine had this towards the end, often upwards of 5 times a day! PP is right, expect it to continue once they're out and well beyond.

Starlive23 · 15/09/2019 11:45

Op fwiw if there is a problem with the cord, growth problems and lack of movement are things to look out for, they would be far, far more indicative than hiccups of a problem. Keep an eye on kick counts and keep having your regular midwife appointments and this will flag up any problems. And be prepared for lots of hiccups outside the womb too!
