A family member has offered me lots of stuff. Such as - car seat, bouncers, Chicco next to me crib, clothes, Moses basket...

When they arrived with it, it was all really dusty, grubby and worn and some bits broken.
They got a bit sad when I turned down some stuff so I felt really bad and took:
The Moses basket with the part that secures the basket to the rocker broken and the interior of the basket itself dirty/stained.
A bouncer covered in dust and dog hair and stained
The Chicco next to me crib which i’ve just put up and appears to be very wobbly with a fixing missing, stained and i’m sure there’s mould on it.
The clothes

Just after a bit of advice really as i’m reading about cot death and getting worried - obviously I’ll clean and wash what I can and get new mattresses for the Moses basket and next to me crib (not sure why I need them both to be honest) but what would you all do with regards to the crib being wobbly and stained? I obviously don’t want to put my baby at risk of anything but equally don’t know if i’m overreacting as this is the first time i’m doing this...
Thank you 😊
(Sorry I probably come across as completely stupid but would love some advice)

I would feel the same way as u ,esp with the dust dog hair & broken parts.
I was going to reuse things i had for this baby but changed my mind & got new just beacause its a 6year age gap so for safety reasons i got new.u can pick up new things cheap, ive saved almost £500 shopping around.x

Just get rid of it. You shouldn’t use broken stuff, it really isn’t safe. The clothes I’d probably keep if they were my taste as you can give them a good wash but nothing else.

They should feel ashamed giving your their stuff like that! I doubt they let their child sleep in filth ridden Moses baskets and so on! Shocking!

TTc2019BabyNo1 · 14/09/2019 15:42

Thank you all!
Yes sorry, I should probably say - they don’t live in filth but the stuff has been sitting around in a garage for a while I think.
It was very kind of them to offer me things to help save money, now i’m thinking I made a mistake accepting... live and learn...

If the bouncer cover removes I would try washing it on a high temperature and wash the clothes too. If they come out nice and clean fine if not I would bin them. I wouldn’t run the risk with the Moses basket or next to me crib especially if you suspect mould and parts missing or broken.

And regarding the crib - can you find a replacement fixing and wash/ rub stains with bleach at all?

I've taken lots of second/third hand stuff and cleaned/washed where necessary (bouncer cover when my baby burped all over it) - if security issue stay on the safe side.
Although keep in mind newborns aren't very active - it's different if you have a toddler in the house who's likely to tug at everything!

Oh, and re Moses basket and next to me crib - we had a Moses basket and a crib the first 5-6 months (baby outgrew then after), which was useful as the crib stayed in the bedroom for the night and we used the Moses basket in kitchen and living room in the daytime. It's not necessary to have both at all, but having a place for baby to sleep/lie in all rooms i quite useful.

The fabric parts from the Chicco can go through the wash I think

HJWT · 15/09/2019 07:05

Id just send a pic and say sorry friend but seems to be broken, my DM/DF/DS (whoever you can think of) actually already bought me one new though & it was meant to be a surprise! Oops, would you like me to drop this stuff back to you? 😁

MaverickSnoopy · 15/09/2019 07:20

I would only use the things that were safe or could be cleaned. I would then buy my own things (either new or marketplace) and say that I have been gifted things from other people too.

nonmerci · 15/09/2019 07:57

I wouldn’t risk using any of them tbh. Sure, you can try washing it all but with missing fixings? It isn’t worth the risk. I’d bin it all or give it back to them and explain why.

Beldon · 15/09/2019 23:18

I used the excuse that I was bought things for presents. People get desperate to give you their old stuff. Some has been really useful and saved loads of money but some have been badly stained and broken. You wonder what goes through people’s heads, possibly because it was well used and loved by them they don’t see the damage. One person gave me a bag full of body suits, every one had poo stains on Confused

I read somewhere the other day that secondhand mattresses have shown to increase the risk of SIDS (cot death)

I bought a second hand cotbed with a mattress and when I read that we ordered a new mattress right away.

When I mentioned it to my mum, mum mentioned that she vaguely thought it maybe be something to do with second hand items having vomit or other nasty things on that increase the risk for baby.

This would be a completely reasonable and valid reason to buy new bits and explain to your family that, although you are extremely grateful for the gesture, it is recommended to invest in new sleep aids such as bedside cribs, mattresses and noses baskets due to the increass risk to baby, which is obviously not a risk you're willing to take.

I read it in my Emma's Diary magazine for context.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 15/09/2019 23:25

I'm talking in relation to ths stains on your items from family. You dont know what those stain are from, I wouldnt risk it.

Quirkyquichie · 17/09/2019 19:24

Unless she's going be Mooching around your bedroom just sling the cruddy mouldy broken stuff. If she noticed, just say part was broken, you contacted chico, they replaced the whole thing. She wont know.
There's nothing wrong worth second hand, I've bought a few things second hand, but theyre clean, not broken and im still going to wash them myself anyway.

titnomatani · 17/09/2019 19:53

Any kind of mould on anything baby related is a health hazard. Bin, bin, bin.
