Early pregnancy and job interview! Advice needed...

Hi guys,

I'm so excited to be finally posting in the pregnancy forum! So I was made redundant a couple of months ago but we decided to keep trying. After 10 months we were right to as I've now got my positive test. It's such early days as I'm only 5 week's from the beginning of last AF.
Im currently doing a casual job and living off redundancy but this isn't going to last forever. I have an interview next week for a great full time, good money job but it will require at most a 1.5 hour commute. Should I call off the interview? How likely is it that I'm going to want to go back full time after? Should I just look for a full time or part time job that I don't care about as much? We can't really survive just on DP wage as it is and I want to work as much as possible to save enough for after... I didn't think I'd this would happen this month but it could be great timing having a natural career break?

Any advice would be appreciated, anyone been through something similar?
Thanks!

Hi OP,
Congratulations on pregnancy and interview!

I've not been in a similar situation but would advise to go for the interview anyway (and NOT tell them you're pregnant). You can weigh up all the options earnestly once you have an employment offer.

I would generally say, go for the job to keep your options open - you can always quit if you find it's not for you/the commute is too long/you definitely want to stay at home medium-term with the baby. There's also the option to ask for flexible working, or going back part-time perhaps if you don't fancy full-time?

Good luck!

Maybe not go for a small business. They really don't need the expense of paying you to have a baby

I vote go for it! You won’t know how you will feel after. It’s more money and experience which l am sure will be appreciated

@KatiePricesLeftEar lm assuming she won’t be eligible for their maternity package so not really an issue for them

@KatiePricesLeftEar
Small businesses don't tend to have enhanced maternity packages. It's SMP, and that is reimbursed by the government so it doesn't really cost them anything.

Ah, I understand 😀

I would say go for the interview.

I had not quite the same situation. I got the job then found out I was pregnant just after accepting it in writing. I decided to go for the job still but tell them I was pg. I had a 3 month notice to work so once I got there it may have been obvious. It wasn't easy to decide either way go for the job or stay put in old job.

I worked 6 months took 6 months mat leave then was made redundant 6 months after returning to work. Being one of the newer staff I think didn't help. But if you are considering being a Sahm this may not matter to you?

I agree that if it is a small company perhaps you should think carefully about taking the job.

Onthe commute I had an 1hr+ each way I was ok. But currently pg and don't thing I could do the travel this time around.

Go for it. And don't say a word about being pregnant. You might love the company, the role etc and can decide if you get offered the position.
The commute may not bother you or cause an issue.

I've had friends who have switched jobs in early pregnancy, when they've ended up telling the company, they've been surprised by the positive response, but they have gone into it with a positive outlook on returning to work and proving themselves and their worth beforehand. I know it doesn't always work out like that but you never know.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the input. I'm guessing my hormones are making me dramatic as I burst into tears about it yesterday Grin. Luckily it's not a small company and like you say I'm buggered for a good maternity pay anyway! I think I'll go for the interview and cross the bridge of accepting if it happens, I'm worrying about what I don't know at the moment so I will see how Tuesday goes! Thanks all xx
