Okay so my partners sister has bought some cardigans and bonnets from this lady who knots them. I absolutely hate cardigans and even more bonnets 🙈 proper hideous things that shouldn’t even go on a baby Imo. I don’t want to be rude and tell her though since she has paid for them haha, my partner hates them too 😂 proper fluff and stuff on them 😩 what would you guys do haha

Smile sweetly, say thank you, take a couple of pictures of baby wearing them, put them back in the drawer until baby grows out of them.

As Tableclothing has said.

Ellii · 12/09/2019 08:17

@Tableclothing yeah that is probably the best option, I can imagine these are not going to be the last ones either 🙈

To be honest I love a cardigan on a baby (as long as it's not too frilly!) but bonnets are just a step too far!

As PP said, put the baby in it a few times for pictures or when she comes to visit and then say they grew out of it. Once baby is more than about 5/6 months old you can probably get away with saying they are a bit old for a bonnet/always try and pull them off/cry when you put them on. That might discourage her from continuing to buy them.

Cloth bonnets are all the rage around here along with turbans which I find very odd on babies.

Love cardigans in babies.

We had the ugliest poncho and bonnet knitted for baby and I can't even bring myself to take it out the drawer Grin

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/09/2019 08:40

My mum got some knitted when ds was a baby. She had arthritis and couldn’t knit anymore so thought she was doing a nice thing. All frills and blue ribbons. I thanked her, took a photo and wrapped them up and put them away. I couldn’t bring myself to give them away.

She didn’t even dress me like a dolly when I was a baby! They were beautifully made though - real skill.

I mean don’t get me wrong the cardigans are very well knitted, even the bonnets are. I just really don’t like that kind of stuff haha. Cardigans I don’t mind as long as they are nice and simple, just a clean cardigan without fluff and bows and stuff. I just think bonnets are something my mom would have put in me back in the days like 29 years ago 😂

As above, take a photo & put it away! Grin My mother in law buys clothes for my daughter that are so not my taste and over the two years, I’ve learnt you can appease by doing just that! And the excuse you have so many clothes that things sometimes just get worn once!

Also, if your baby happens to be due in spring/summer, you can just say it’s been too mild to wear them! I love me a plain knitted cardigan and we got some lovely ones from family & friends but had a May born baby so they were never really worn Sad

Seeline · 12/09/2019 10:42

Cardigans are brilliant for babies - don't have the problem of getting them on and off over their heads which always results in tears.

Nonmerci · 12/09/2019 11:14

I personally love cardigans and bonnets on babies. My DS has a rather fetching cardigan and pixie hat collection Grin. I pay a lot of money for them from Etsy, wish I could either knit myself or had a relative who could...

Ask your hospital if they need any. I know the maternity ward in my old local hospital were always crying out for knitted hats.

Ellii · 12/09/2019 12:53

@Bol87 yeah mother in laws and mothers buy strange stuff sometimes haha! Unfortunately she’s due next week so no spring or summer baby 😩 then again it has been quite warm recently haha, if not I’ll put it on her once and take a picture ☺️

@Seeline I don’t mind cardigans that are just plain normal coloured and neutral with no fluff or anything on. Those can be nice. Just these ones have fluff and stuff in them and I can’t deal haha

@Nonmerci a lot of people love cardigans and bonnets too ☺️ Not everyone is the same, which is a good thing. Yeah I will ask the hospital too and see if they need anything!

Put them on once, quickly take a picture, then take off and never wear again Grin there’s a few baby pics of me in frilly dresses, my mum said she hated them and she just put them on for a quick photo to show to relatives.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 12/09/2019 13:02

I think they are lovely if handknitted in the right pattern with beautiful wool (I am a knitter and made several for my son). We all have different tastes and that’s fine. I don’t like leggings on little babies (they don’t have waists!) but people gave them as presents and I said thank you very much and took a picture.

PutBabyInTheCorner · 12/09/2019 13:15

Love hand knitted stuff on babies and think cardigans and bonnets look great. My baby is always in hand knitted clothes but think I must have very old fashioned taste judging by other posts.
You're right everyone has different taste, I hate babies dressed in modern clothes, or things with logos but thought knitted stuff on kids was universally loved so she probably thought she was doing a really nice thing. I have opposite problem, my mother in law buys my kids very modern stuff - leopard print, jeans with lots of logos on, Burberry prints...
Donate them to someone, it'd be a shame to waste them.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 12/09/2019 14:37

The current fashion is for very narrowly cut clothes for babies and toddlers, mirroring that for adults I suppose, which is restrictive when they are wriggling, crawling, walking etc. So I make a lot of clothes for my son or buy second hand clothes designed for cloth nappies as they are more roomy
