Sore back - any thoughts?

Ladies, I'm 17+1 and have developed a really sore back over the last few days. It is sore deep down on the right hand side and though I have tried extra pillows in bed and a warm, soothing bath, it's not shifting. Any advice? thanks

Hello there

14+6 and I am exactly the same. So no adivce but similarly afflicted so v interested in what others have to say!

what postures are you in when sitting down etc?

I find when i have a sore back, not sitting totally upright made it worse.

Has gone away since i have been sitting on birthing ball at home; a different chair at work (really cool one that makes my knees tuck underneath me and forces straight back) and basically not slumping which a lot of modern chairs/ sofas can make you do.

At work I sit upright at a computer. I thought my chair was ok before, I am good at sitting upright but I'm beginning to wonder if a cushion would help?

I have a gym ball so could sit on that at home. Is that a good idea?

as i type at home am sitting on my gym (birthing) ball - they are the one and the same. so definite good idea.

Have you had a health assessment at work yet? they should do one, but even without that, ask for a better chair. My company got me one of these - not at all expensive and it really sorted me out.

ergonomic kneeling chair

another great position is to sit on the floor cross legged when at home as opposed to couch.

That chair looks great. HR (all the dept!) are on holiday until the end of the month (no other dept would get away with that!) so I shall add a request to my list. I actually like sitting cross legged thanks for all your help.

I'm 37 weeks and have lower back pain too. It's definitely worse when sitting at a desk all day and sleeping in same position (on left side as recommended) all night. Sitting on a birth ball while watching TV and swaying a bit seems to help. As does swimming front crawl a couple of times a week (lovely weightless feeling). I find myself doing yoga stretches at 3am and waking my DH for back rubs. Trying to get up and walk around the office periodically seems to help too. Good luck. If I could afford it I'd go for a pregnancy massage.

I've had back pain on and off throughout the pregnancy too (I'm 30 weeks now).

One thing I'd say is that you're entitled to a risk assessment at work. If your chair or desk is making your back worse, your employer has to sort out an alternative for you.

The other thing I triend is osteopathy. I went to the British School of Osteopathy in London and they've got a special maternity clinic. You're seen by students so it's cheap (I think it was about £20 for a full assessment and then cheaper for follow ups) but they're fully supervised by a senior osteopath.

It was quite useful. They gave me some tips on posture and they gave me a bit of a massage/manipulation which seemed to help.

TBH, I've been too lazy to go back but I would recommend it if you're suffering.

Here's a link to it if you're interested...

BTW, be warned, the only thing I really didn't like about it was having to strip down to my bra and knickers in front of the osteopaths...one of whom was a really good looking bloke
