Transvaginal (internal) Ultrasound - scared

Hi all,

I hope I'm posting in the right place. I've seen a couple of older posts along similar lines but just wanted some... perspective... maybe?

I had a little spotting last night, so this morning spoke to a midwife. She said she wasn't overly concerned by it but as I also had backache that she'd book me in for an early scan (I'll be 6+1ish on Friday when I'm having the scan) to reassure me and that due to the early stage, the scan would be internal.

I was okay with that until good old Google brought up a bunch of replies on a US forum with women saying they've had it and then miscarried within hours of having it. I know better than to believe everything you read on the 'net, but there were literally dozens of replies with the same story.

Everything else I've read says there's no risk but now I'm scared and unsure.

Anyone had one at such an early stage and can offer any views / advice etc.?

Thanks

No danger at all.

They're pretty much standard in other countries for early pregnancy, as the uterus doesn't reach above the pelvis until past 12 weeks. So obs who want a reliable look will do an internal, even for routine appointments.

As a PP said, those women who miscarried after an internal scan were unfortunately going to miscarry anyway.

Fingers crossed for you OP, bleeding is very scary but it can be fine. I have had bleeding in two pregnancies, unfortunately one didn't work out but the other one resulted in my now 3.5 year old DD!

Thanks everyone for your reassurance. I'm feeling quite jittery today but trying to keep my anxieties at bay. The spotting I had came fairly shortly (1.5hrs ish) after a slightly strained BM, only lasted for 2 hours and at the moment there's been no blood since (apart from some of the old stuff making its way out a bit slower).

I'm worried about the potential results as well as still having some nerves after reading that other forum (I know I should ignore it, but it's sometimes easier said than done!)

It's been great to have such supportive messages from you all.

good luck OP

i've also had a scan this way with both my pregnancies, it was grand. I hope it goes well.

Hi all,

Just wanted to give you a little update. I had my scan this morning - had no idea how quick it would be!
Everything is progressing well. I've been estimated to be about 5+6 and Nemo's little heartbeat was visible on the screen. The found no particular reason for my spotting so I've just been advised to get in touch with the MW if I have any again, but as it stands at the moment, all is progressing as it should be.

Obviously it's still super early days so we're just taking it one day at a time, but for now at least I can relax a little.

Thank you all so much for your reassurance and encouragement - it helped a lot in keeping me sane and helping me to rationalise things :)

Happy to hear your good news x I can’t find a Nemo fish so here’s an Aunt Dory🐟

I had one at 6 weeks as it was a threatened miscarriage. No pain at all. The little bean I saw on the screen is now 20 year old 6foot plus bearded sonSmile
