Just wondered what people thought about this. I didn't have any first time round but I'm being a bit more relaxed with the second pregnancy - odd beer at the weekend. Do people think it a definite no-no or is some acceptable?

wills, I've been fine with not drinking, or I was, until I read your description below of wanting a chilled glass of white wine and someone else's longing for a cold glass of white Burgundy and just had to have a glass! I therefore had said glass of cold white Burgundy with supper tonight, bliss! I am managing to stop at 1 though.

Same as most, I avoided drink in the first 3 months and have allowed myself to have the odd pint of beer or glass of wine a day since. I reckon I'll do more harm to the baby through stress and breathing in other people's disgusting secondhand cigarette smoke, than through the odd unit of alcohol.

My main problem is indigestion, but I think I've found the remedy.....

Milk is supposed to be good for indigestion... so I now drink Kalua and Milk!! You only need a small amount of Kalua and it makes a nice long cool drink. It's like a milkshake with attitude!!

Stripymouse, you can take supplements or use a special blend of Omega Oils that you can buy in the supermarket and use to make salad dressings/put on baked potatoes etc. I ate tons of mackerel when pg - there was so much I felt I had to avoid it was nice to be told to actively tuck into something!

Had a little drink if I fancied it - mind you I was only allowed Lambrusco so it wasn't really worth the effort!

Haven't read all the replies but tended to have one or two units once or twice a week (generally red wine), if you are sensible I don't believe it does any harm.

aloha - I have tried the capsules and found that they give me bad indigestion but hadn?t heard about the oil you can buy for salads and cooking - will check it out at my next shopping trip, thanks for that. I wish that I could eat loads of mackerel like you have done - but the thought of it just turns my stomach! I don?t know what my problem is with capsules and pills - oerhaps it is just pyschological and I should just get on with it!

The oil I have is Granovita Organic Speciaity Omega Blend Virgon Cold Pressed oil (a rich and natural source of Omega 3-6 & 9) I got it from the health food section of Sainsbury's

It contains flaxseed, hemp and sesame oils amoungst others. You can't cook/fry with it, sadly, as heat destroys the benefits of the oils but you can put it on things. It isn't as yummy as olive oil but can be mixed with it or butter on potatoes and vegetables and used on salads.
Supposedly good for skin and hair too!

Browsing through the mumsnet archive recently, I found this thread and thought it could offer some insight into the drinking in pregnancy debate.

Most posters here admit to moderate drinking, which has an upper limit of about 8 units a week. Given that the thread was started in 2002, the children of the pregnancies discussed here should all be at least 8 years old now.

This is when the anti-alochol brigade say that some mental retardation on the Foetal Alcohol spectrum can be detected (ie poor concentration, poor hand -eye coordination, ADHD) as opposed to full-blown Foetel Alcohol Syndrome, which is detectable at birth, and is the result of very heavy drinking (ie 40 units +)

So, my question is, if any of your original posters from this thread are still here, do any of you attribute any of these symptoms in your children, and if so, would you link it to your moderate alcohol in pregnancy?

(I write with no judgement by the way, given that I drunk on average 3 x 175 ml glasses of wine in pregnancy a week, which works out as 6 units)

had a wine spritzer when celebrating wedding anniversary a few month's ago - I had just had 20 week scan and found out I was having a boy so it was a double celebration when out for a meal. Haven't had anything since - 2nd pg. I am not that bothered either way about alcohol so can take or leave it.

With the first pg I didn't drink atall.
