Pilates in pregnancy

I’ve never done Pilates before but have heard it can be good during pregnancy. Anyone tried it? And will it be ok to do if i’ve never done it before?

I did pregnancy Pilates but had been doing Pilates before. However it will cater for all and is less intense than general pilates. I found it very good and you could work at your own level. We did a lot of pelvic floor exercises too which is good. It wasn’t very strenuous but enough to make you feel good and all the time the teacher said how each exercise and movement would help - a lot is preparation for after the birth and carrying baby/ car seats and bending etc

Yes it is much gentler than yoga and more about core strength. Pregnancy specific one will be ideal and just say you haven't done it before.

I did, having never done it before. I went to specific pg classes, and general ones.,Just tell the instructor that you are pg, I remember that there were. Some things I wasn’t meant to do.

It depends on the type of class you go to. My Pilates instructor (also my physio) told me to stop as soon as I got pregnant. She said the type of Pilates I was doing was not suitable for pregnancy and that I would need to change to a pregnancy Pilates class, with an instructor who is qualified in this area.

So I guess it's fine as long as it's tailored for pregnant women. Pilates can actually be really intense. I've been doing both yoga and Pilates for years - Pilates is the one that makes me wake up with sore muscles the next day!

I think it sounds boring as hell. And like you'd have to put in a stupid number of hours to see much benefit. I can't help but feel a lot of the pregnancy take up is a back-patting exercise because you're being healthy. ...but it's not even advised.

Strong recommendations all round from medical profession are not to start up "new" exercises after you're pregnant, and if you don't exercise at all do full body exercises closer to normal movement, esp walking, running, swimming, with gradual build up.

The advice on here, if you're going to, is sound. But why would you???
