I’m 9 weeks pregnant. Ivf pregnancy. Still taking lots of drugs including high dose progesterone pessaries. The last week I have been so constipated. I get up and within 45 min I’m cramping and need the loo. It’s so painful. I know I shouldn’t strain but I can’t help it. I need to go but it’s so difficult. I’ve started taking a stool softener that safe in pregnancy as well as raising my feet so knees higher than hips. Any other tips??

I’m a teacher and go back to work tomorrow. I haven’t got time to be sat on the loo praying for a poo for 40 minutes at a time!

Prunes!

VictoriaBun · 01/09/2019 10:36

This sounds from but ....... get some kitchen roll , and put that on the floor. Lay out toilet paper on the kitchen roll and squat over the area. It is really out most natural way of going to the loo !
Once done flush the toilet paper but not the kitchen roll.

Up your fibre intake - lots of fruit, vegetables, high fibre cereals.
Make sure you're drinking plenty of water.
Plenty of exercise, eg walking.
Gentle yoga poses that get your hips moving.

A big bowl of Fruit & Fibre or Weetabix!

ikphillips · 01/09/2019 14:07

Lactulose from the pharmacy. One dose and you'll be right as rain :)

exWifebeginsat40 · 01/09/2019 14:10

no, you should definitely shit on the kitchen floor.

inspectorlewis · 01/09/2019 15:35

@exWifebeginsat40 😄😄

Prune juice, lots of it. Lactulose did bigger all for me apart from appalling trapped wind.

Bol87 · 01/09/2019 21:42

Careful with the Luctalose dose, I misread the instructions on mine post first birth & wow. I spent about 6 hours on the toilet 😳 does the job though I suppose!

I use Laxido/Movicol .. it’s safe in pregnancy & quite gentle on the stomach. You’ll need a prescription though.

I’m suffering horrendously at the moment, I’m taking 2x anti-sickness meds for HG and living off potato, my digestive system is shot. It’s really blooming unpleasant, I feel your pain!

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 01/09/2019 21:47

I had awful constipation that gave me really horrible piles.

Honestly cannot reccomend weetabix enough. I had 3 weetabix every morning and it kept me so regular, that and absolutely shite loads of water, take a bottle of water to work and make sure you refill it every other hour at least.

Water and weetabix. The two W's!

IWouldLikeToKnow · 01/09/2019 21:49

I was very dependent on prune juice for my pregnancy. If you up your fibre, be sure to up your water intake along with it.

themouldneverbotheredmeanyway · 01/09/2019 22:10

I found a tin of prunes a day more effective than laxative medicine. Then added prune juice if got particularly constipated.

Glycerol suppositories can help if you have something that just won't come out.

Squatting is a far easier position to poo in if you get really stuck, so not such a crazy suggestion up thread, obviously you will need to find something to squat over!

Sabee · 01/09/2019 23:39

Squatting is all I do - over the toilet sea, with feet resting on sides - but carefully! No socks.

I had horrendous constipation, have overhauled diet but still find squatting eastern style ON the toilet seat the best ever.

Who cares, no one is watching!

And it comes out quicker Grin

Bol87 · 02/09/2019 08:05

Oo, if you want to mimic squatting you can buy a Squatty Potty! 😁 I have a knock off version and it really does help! It’s like a little step that gets your knees into a squat like position!

LiveInAHidingPlace · 02/09/2019 08:08

You can try chia seeds too, sprinkle them on everything, salad, cereal, toast etc. They really help (lots of other good nutrition too.)
