Slightly scared of gas and air - am I being silly?

Just that really. I'm 36 weeks so starting to think about labour.
During a recent visit to maternity I heard a woman in a neighbouring cubicle on gas and air, and to be fair, it sounded like it made a huge difference as she was in pain and struggling to begin with but was chatting away to her husband after about 10 minutes of gas and air, was obviously working for her.
My fear us around the sick / dizzy feeling that I've heard it can cause, slightly put off by the thought of that.
Anyone have any experiences they can share?

Bloody loved the gas and air. Doesn't stop the pain but makes you high enough not to care.

Lovely stuff.

It made me dizzy as anything and threw up constantly but i think it was more of a slight distraction as I blew in and out

I'd love some G&A right now! The midwife told DH to take it off me as it can cause the cervix to harden or something but I had a death grip on it so they left me to it Grin

God I hated it! Had it on the first two (along with tens machine), just made me feel woozy and puke. Didn't use it on dc3 (just used tens) and felt much better for it.

Gas & air is the best its all u need to give birth, i loved it.its all i ask for.
Dont be scared try it then if u dont like it just stop using it & they can give u other things x

My mum said she thinks I held the record for most gas and air consumed during labour 😂 love the stuff hahaha !!

It’s all I’ve had in four births including two home births. Bloody love the stuff it’s amazing. The first time I bit the nozzle it looked like a rabid dog has been at it, TBH it gives you something to do and distracts you rather than takes the pain away. Great for the stitches afterwards too. Even DH had a puff Grin

It's great. I was sick only one time and then after that I felt fine. I am always sick when drunk though, so I think part of it was my body associating that feeling with needing to be sick!

I did feel slightly woozy when taking it but that was probably a plus and helped me get through labour!
Like others have said... if you don't like it or feel too dizzy, you can always stop and the effect wears off quickly.

I loved it. Make sure you have some lip balm with you as it really dries your lips xx

Gas and air was the only pain relief I had so afraid I've got nothing to compare it with but I did use it for the last 2 hours of a 16 hour labour. Didn't like the first 'puff' but soon came round to it! Did very little for the actual pain by that stage but did make me feel a bit 'out of it'. Looking back now I'm not sure how much that was a good thing because I did get quite angry / confused but at the time I thought it helped plus the physical act of breathing it in gave me something else to focus on. Good luck Smile

I'm another lover I am afraid. Never been high in my life until I had G&A and then my mw couldn't drag me off it. Wonderful stuff. I had back to back baby and would have suffered without it. Am pregnant now and will be asking for it on arrival.....

I passed out on Gas and Air. I could still hear, but I lost all tone, feeling, etc. Was bizarre hearing them call my name and slapping me, but not feeling it. I soon got back the feeling and tone, until the next contraction. The midwife and DH got used to it pretty quickly.

Lougle · 31/08/2019 22:35

Having said that, I'm pretty much teetotal, so no tolerance for anything Grin

Aurignacian · 31/08/2019 22:37

Hated it. Made me feel really upset and cry
