Pregnant one week before ivf

I have found out I’m pregnant which is fantastic but I have an appointment next week to start ivf testing/treatment.Im 40 soon.Im afraid that this will be an ectopic pregnancy ( as I have a mild pain in my left side since finding out) or I will miscarry. If I cancel the appointment then I will be too old to start ivf for free with nhs.I feel panicked.I was thinking of going to a & e and telling them I have a pain in my side so they will scan me and see if I’m having ectopic pregnancy.

Hey ! You might be fine. There is no telling that you'll miscarry or have an ectopic. If you're concerned and want to know if it's viable, the less stressful option is to just get a private scan done quickly- then you can decide what to do. You could go down the a and e route, but you'll need to really play up the pain and wait around etc until you get scanned - you could go to the early pregnancy unit. There they will do a pregnancy test and if positive they'll scan you. The best of luck to you and tentative congratulations!

@Moussemum what is the pain like and were is it? How far along are you?

A&E will just send you away but MAY refer you to EPU for a scan, they can't scan you then & there... better of going to GP on Monday who can also refer you to EPU or ring them yourself but as PP said you will really need to play up on the pain, also if your only 4 weeks there will be nothing to see anyway so will have to wait another 2 weeks for another scan! Also I don't think an ectopic pregnancy would be causing pain at this point if you are only very early x

mlh123 · 31/08/2019 04:07

It might be implantation pain. Best of luck x

I got pregnant a week after our first consultation to have ivf, the fertility clinic gave me an early scan to make sure everything was ok before they discharged me from the clinic.

Teddybear45 · 31/08/2019 04:26

Go to the appointment. The clinic should offer you a scan to see if it’s a viable pregnancy

Kinsters · 31/08/2019 04:32

Congratulations!

Can you postpone the IVF appointment for a couple of weeks? That way you can get a scan (maybe pay for a private scan) and have a slightly better idea whether the pregnancy is viable.

Thanks very much ladies.Im so delighted to be pregnant.such a surprise after over 2 years ttc.I think I will go on Tuesday to my appointment.I will be 4 weeks 6 days (although if I go by the first day of spotting I would be 5 weeks exactly).Maybe they will be kind and scan me.I feel like this is my last chance.Im hoping that this pain on my left side isn’t serious. It feels like it’s in my front hip bone, around the side and around the back.it could be ligiments stretching or sciatica or wind or constipation. If I were 30 I would cancel ivf and wait for scan but I feel like it’s my last chance.

When I went for my one round of nhs ivf, they said so long as the referral was in, then i could choose when to start so long as the funding was used within six months (i was last minute too, and so that was six months after my birth day & the cut off date). Maybe you can ask the clinic to delay your start?

Mistymeow · 31/08/2019 09:00

Tentative congratulations! The same thing happened to me, although sadly I did go on to miscarry. I spoke to my GP for advice and he told me to call up the department and explain, and that I shouldn’t have an ivf appointment when I’m currently pregnant. So I called up the bookings department and they said they would cancel the appointment but if I did go on to miscarry they would put me back on the list- it wouldn’t change my status. I recommend you call them for advice.

Regarding the pain- keep an eye on it and if it becomes really painful go to a&e. If it’s mild I don’t think EPU will scan so early as they won’t be able to see anything if you are 4 weeks. It is normal to have some cramping this early. I really hope it works out for you x

Moussemum · 31/08/2019 21:57

Thanks for the replies.I will give the clinic a ring on Monday and ask their advice.im finding it hard to sleep tonight and have been the previous nights.Im so excited but also anxious.

Congratulations! The same thing has happened to me. Bfp the month before we were due to start ivf!
The pain could be anything unfortunately. I had left side pain in my first pregnancy which was in the right place but unfortunately I miscarried. This time I panicked when I felt the pain again bug all appears to be ok so far. I had lots of cramps and pains between 5 and 6 weeks.
The fertility clinic should offer you a scan at 6 or 7 weeks after which they'll discharge you if all goes well, if not they tell you what to do next.
Good luck xx

Update.I rang the hospital today and explained about my BFP.They rescheduled my appointment for 7 weeks away.Which was really good of them and it means someone else can have my cancellation. Also I’m hoping if all goes well I will have my first scan before then.I have to contact them if there is any change.Smile

If you've had confirmation of your funding you should be fine.....if you haven't some NHS places reset the clock and say you then have to try naturally for another 6 months and then start the process again (happened to a friend of mine earlier this year)

If unfortunately this pregnancy doesn't progress you could "not tell" them about it however once you've been for scans and spoke to hospital/doctors etc you'll be in the system

Moussemum · 03/09/2019 09:30

I understand what you mean.I guess I just have to see how I go.There isn’t much else I can do.I hope this pregnancy goes ok and I won’t have to do ivf but we will see.Its so wonderful but so nerve wrecking.

Congratulations!!
I really hope everything works out for you.
Just before I found out I was pregnant the pain was unbearable! I thought it was period pain but obviously implantation. The pain was that bad I had my partner smacking my back with a rolling pin while I was clenching my front ! Felt like my ovary was about to explode. 2 days later I did a test and it was positive! I’ve had two miscarriages before and implantation with neither of them two was nothing like this one. I convinced myself that it must be ectopic as the pain was so bad. We decided to book a private scan for 7 weeks and there she was in the correct place.
I’m currently 25 weeks and had no pain so far that can compare to implantation.

Good luck xxx

Moussemum · 03/09/2019 09:47

Congratulations on your pregnancy.I am sorry about your miscarriages. The pain seems to have eased a bit.It feels like a sciatica thing.I had sciatica with my son at 7/8 months pregnant but this is early.i have really bad heartburn today.I have ran out of my omeprazole and I’m eating on a repeat prescription. How is your pregnancy going?

OP posts:
Moussemum · 03/09/2019 09:48

Sorry waiting on a new prescription.Smile
