Piles - OUCH !!!! Desperate

I have been to docs and it's official. I have piles - Oh no!!

It has taken me a weeks of pain to pluck up the courage and seek help. After three hours sleep last night I went to the GP.

Who basically said I am at that stage (6 weeks to go) and there is not alot that can be done . Not allowed to use special creams due to two MC one brought on by premature labour.

I have been given lactulose to help me go to the loo, but I have to suffer the pain, itching, throbbing etc till they settle.

It is so sore and uncomfortable , .

I can't be the only one. Any advice or tips.

So far I have tried:
Hot baths
Cold packs
Vasaline/Almond oil
Witch hazel
Sudocrem
Paracetamol

None of the above lasts for any more that 10 mins relief.

Ohhh you poor thing

I've been using cream and I'm pregnant, is that bad to do then?

cupcake78 · 07/08/2007 14:49

I was told the only reason I can't is because of my previous history. She said there has not been enough research to prove it is completely safe.

I have been stopped from doing all sorts of things during this pregancy. Can't go out dancing, went swimming at the weekend and got Braxton Hicks because the water was so cold, been told off today for that. Was going to Aquanatal today but been told not to do that either, risk of infection.

Sorry thomcat but not sure if this will apply to everyone. I doubt it! but ask if your not sure.

I don't know if it will cure it but it should make things a bit easier if you drink LOADS of water, eat lots of fruit and veg, and make sure you get lots of fibre.

Sorry I can't be any more help. Sounds miserable

missbumpy · 07/08/2007 15:01

PS. I wonder if you could try homeopathy. I know that Nelsons do a homeopathic or herbal piles cream that you can get in health food shops and maybe some bigger branches of Boots. Could you check with your GP or midwife about whether it's safe for you to use?

MrsBadger · 07/08/2007 15:05

oh yes, now this is one occasion where even with my sceptical-scientist hat on I would recommend something homeopathic - becaus eif it works it works, and if it doesn't, well, it's just sugar, so it can't do any harm...

cupcake78 · 07/08/2007 15:06

missbumpy - good idea. Haven't thought about that. I will try and see what I can find out.

I am eating really well and have been through out my pregancy. Still only out a total of 1 stone on almost 34 weeks. My thighs and bottom have still suffered considerably.

Shouldn't crow really watch it will pile on now I have given up work!!!

missbumpy · 07/08/2007 15:16

Blimey! I'm not exactly sure how much I've put on because I haven't weighed myself but I got weighed by the midwife a few weeks ago (when I was about 28 weeks) and I think I've put on about 2 and a half stone .

Anyway, still good to drink lots of water if you're not already.

Here's a link to that Nelson's cream...

missbumpy · 07/08/2007 15:21

PS. I haven't actually tried it so I can't vouch for it. Just thought it might be worth a go if you've been banned from using the usual stuff.

BooWidger · 07/08/2007 15:21

Hi, I am due tomorrow and have been suffering really badly with piles for the past 6 weeks or so. I was able to use creams but nothing really helped and was panicking about going into labour - been more scared about the piles than the labour pains!! However, during the last 2 weeks I have been drinking alot of water, and I mean ALOT!!! The piles have gone! Forcing myself to drink at least 6 pints a day on top of my usual liquid intake. It's hard but seems to have worked and also helps prevent infection. Warm, not hot, baths also helped.

missbumpy · 07/08/2007 15:26

I agree that water is the way forward. I've been having to drink loads due to annoying UTI that wouldn't clear up with antibiotics. I'm drinking litres and litres and it does seem to help everything to keep on moving through in every sense iykwim!

growingbagpuss · 07/08/2007 15:30

I agree on the drinking lots - I have felt heaps better for drinking tonnes of water - and my one little pile (but also vulval varicose veins -double ouch) have improved lots.

I am also taking arnica - I was due yesterday and wanted to top my system up before the bruising starts!! It does seem to help.

Sudocrem has worked for me - but I see you have tried that. what about tea tree cream? its antispetic and v soothing.

Good luck with sorting that lot out.... nasty little blighters.

I too am nervous about labour with nasty veins... but they do seem to have settled a little now am I so close (well..) to giving birth)

Eaglebird · 07/08/2007 19:03

I've been constipated lately, and it's been a bit a strain (literally) to go to the toilet. I've found eating 2 bowls of Shredded Wheat Fruitful, with a few added prunes (yes, yuk, I know) on the top, per day a big help.
Also drinking more water too. It all helps to soften your poo, which makes it less painful to go to the toilet.
My midwife suggested eating dried apricots too, but they give me terrible wind so I've avoided them.

growingbagpuss · 07/08/2007 19:17

Dried/ tinned prunes...... LOVELY !! I could eat prunes forever, my DS is the samee, only I have to limit his intake to prevent it running everywhere!!

mummamango · 04/01/2010 19:16

Kiwi fruit and lots of it!

jardins · 04/01/2010 19:50

Poor you! I totally sympathise!! I am at 37 and a half weeks and have suffered two major flare ups from 26 weeks on with this, my 3rd pregnancy. I was given some Daflon (sorry, living in France) which helps improve the circulation, I think. I found the cream next to useless, TBH. Despite the dreadful pain I can truthfully say they have hugely diminished after a few days (mine will not disappear as I think I've had them since after my first labour 14 years ago.

Things that have helped me?

Sticking an ice cube (wrapped in a hanky) up there twice a day.

Eating linseed for breakfast with a lot of water and/or yoghurt.

Homeopathy (granules of hammamelis = witchhazel) twice a day.

Patience and faith.

I feel your pain and will send many pile-shrivelling vibes your way!

MumNWLondon · 04/01/2010 20:02

bepanthen (nappy rash cream) gives a little relief - but probably not more than what you have been given. another thing that helped a bit was rubbing in vitamin E into the piles (ie cut top of vit E vitamin pill and rubbing in liquid.

victoriascrumptious · 04/01/2010 20:04

I was just about to post this exact same thread.I am worried that my whole arse will fall out if I go into labour

decaffeinated · 04/01/2010 20:09

You poor thing, I feel for you!

My midwife recommended cypress / lavender oil applied directly to the piles for relief. www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=cypress+oil+hemorrhoids&meta=&aq=5&oq=cypress+oi

I'm currently suffering from them myself (I'm 29 wks)and also find that putting lots of e45 on the piles and up my bum to help keep things lubricated before pooing helps (sorry if too much info!)

Also, some time with your feet raised (ideally lying down)helps direct the blood away from them.

To help ease the pain, I've been taking paracetomol to dull the pain which has helped, although I'm guessing you'd need to check it with your gp before doing that to be sure it's okay.

Hope this helps!

HairyBumCrack · 05/01/2010 10:02

I really sympathise with you as have been suffering myself for the last two months and am still only 30wks pg!

I've tried all the things you have, plus several prescription and otc creams but I'm afraid nothing has really helped.

Apart from trying to keep things, er, regular in that department, I am at the stage of grinning and bearing it - GP cant/wont do anything more and expects them to clear up once baby is here (god, I REALLY hope they do!)

So I'm not much help I'm afraid but wanted to commiserate with you and I hope you get some relief soon

heliotrope · 05/01/2010 13:27

The homeopathic cream is hamamelis (witch hazel) with horsechestnut and something else. It's OK but tbh the hardcore creams are more effective short term ime. Hope it eases for you soon.

heliotrope · 05/01/2010 13:29

Another thought for you - I didn't get them until labour (from pushign I guess) and then suffered considerably for months after and still have them a bit 2 years later. I found the pain horrible and much worse than labour.
So I just thought that might console you - labour will be abreeze in comparison!

kateyjane · 05/01/2010 14:43

I got them really badly with my last pregnancy - not looking forward to it this time! I know you can't take medication but I tried lavender oil which briefly helped - was also great in the bath, and you can mix it in aquas(sp?) cream - found it invaluable to help heal my (small) tears after each birth. MW said to put small amounts on a my pads (sorry if TMI) Wondered if that would also work for the other side!
For those who can take medication I don't think I could have coped without Xyloproct(sp?) cream. I think it was about 50% local anaesthetic and absolute heaven. All the over the counter stuff was rubbish!
