Anaemia & Floradix

Hi guys,

Is Floradix liquid iron OK to take in pregnancy?

I’m 11+4 and suffering with HG. My latest bloods have unsurprisingly come back as anaemic. I certainly feel bone tired so no shock.

I took various iron tablets last pregnancy & they all either made me sick or constipated. With HG, I really can’t bear to be any more sick & I’m already on a constipation inducing whack of Ondansetron!

A friend suggested Floradix as it’s known to not have side affects? Or if people advise not, is there anything else other than prescription tablets?! I am happy to consider these once I’m less sick (started to ease at 14 weeks last pregnancy) but right now, I can’t stomach the idea whatsoever!

Thanks in advance!

It's perfectly safe, but you may find the taste as bad or even worse than the tablets. Mixing it with orange juice does a reasonable job of hiding the taste.

Floradix contains 15.0mg per 20ml.
When I was prescribed iron tablets during pregnancy for anaemia, I was on 252mg per day. This would be equivalent to drinking 336ml of Floradix - so even a large bottle (500ml) wouldn't last 2 days (and costs nearly £18)!

I would look at your prescription and see what dose you've been prescribed, but I suspect Floradix would be nowhere near strong enough. Floradix is a supplement to "safeguard" iron levels, not to treat iron deficiency.

As above. If you you take Floradix as instructed on the bottle/package you will get no where near the amount of iron you need.

Speak to your GP. Because of your sickness there may be the option of an iron infusion or injections.

Oh interesting.. I will do although the thought of dragging myself to the doctors makes me want to cry. I’m so sick & exhausted, I just want to sleep until next March & not have to deal with life what so ever.

Thanks all, I’ll give them a call next week!

I got prescribed Ferrous fumerate liquid (liquid doesn’t cause constipation) over the phone without having to speak to the doctor, although I’m in scotland so might be different from where you are. I’d also been prescribed in a few years back and would need to get a blood test before being prescribed it but when I said that my midwife suggested I go on it, there were no issues.
