Emilia or Emelia

Sorry to start yet another name thread, but I wondered if I could ask for fellow MN opinion on the best/most common spelling for the name Emilia or Emelia please? I'm 26 weeks pregnant, and this is our current favourite girl name, as it works in both UK and Germany which is our current home. (Really liked Emily but v. popular at the moment).

I'm sure if we go for it, we will receive all kinds of funny spellings over the years (is it cruel to choose a name that even the parents aren't sure how to spell?!)

And what middle name goes with it? I guess maybe a single sylable (Rose, Jane, Grace...) Our surname is quite long so would be nice to keep middle name simple.

Sorry, that's more than one question...

I think I prefer Emilia to Amelia (know they ae different names too!) original post was asking Emilia or Emelia, so that's the spelling sorted!

Tigerschick - Thank you for finding the meanings! The Germanic meaning of Amelia made me giggle like a 6 year old. Means 'work, effort, strain' - maybe it is just me but the word 'strain' makes me think of a difficult poo! Such a child.

@ Marina - thanks for the big red dog explanation. This baby is my first, so other than my neice's obsession with Peppa Pig, I am yet to learn about the wonder that is kids TV and have no idea - it's a whole other world!!

I know an Emilia - she is Greek.

tigerschick · 07/08/2007 13:28

MaloryTowers - I knew someone years ago who's mum had a made up name. It was the bane of her life so when she had her own dc she called them Kate and Ian thinking that they were very 'easy' names. Kate was forever being asked what it was short for, and Ian was always asked if it was Iain or Ian!
With the best will in the world there are very few names that are straight forward for everyone. I think you've just got to go with what you like and hope that your dc don't find it too tricky.

We have an Amelia Rose.

Its a gorgeous name. I also wanted Emily but DH wasnt keen and settled for this spelling of Amelia as its spelt how its said so no spelling mistakes.

LaBoheme · 08/08/2007 10:54

Amelia

PrincessGoodLife · 08/08/2007 10:57

Amelia
But can I also drop another one in to the pot: Emina. Love it. Pronounced with the emphasis on the i, so Emina

Someone has said "think Emilia Fox".
I will now be doing that all day and will get no work done... sigh...

Don't know her... but Google Images ARE my friend... sigh....

Monsieur Lapin no doubt enjoyed as much as I did the bit in the last series of "Witless Silence" where she got dressed for a party in front of male-colleague-she-fancies-but-won't-admit-it, and we were treated to a lingering and gratuitous close-up of Foxy zipping herself into some glossy knee-length patent leather boots.

I think Emilia is more unusual than Amelia.

berolina · 08/08/2007 21:31

Emilia definitely. It was on our list for a hypothetical dd (we are having a ds2 now ). I don't think Germans, at least (we live there too) would be tempted to spell it Emelia, as they spell pretty phonetically. I think I would actually pronounce Emelia differently, sort of 'Em-ay-lia', instead of 'Em-ee-lia'.

Ellbell · 08/08/2007 21:31

Emilia or Amelia, but not Emelia.

Ellbell How are you? Oh, it turned up, btw I will explain how!

Rosetip · 08/08/2007 21:36

Emilia- and a really gorgeous fab name, especially if you like Emily.

Only issue is other people spelling it wrong the whole time or child growing up constantly saying "hello, I'm Emilia with an E".
