Does being overweight reduce the accuracy of gender scan?

Just that really. I'm 16 +3 and overweight. I would love to have a gender scan but would it be better to weight till I'm further along in my pregnancy?

I don't know if it would.impact accuracy but I have seen quite a few threads where people have had the scan at 16 weeks to be told at 20weeks it was wrong. I'm not sure when it becomes really clear so would say do your research first. we waited until 20 week one in the end

I was 17 weeks at our gender scan and if it turns out to be wrong I will be very surprised. I'm also quite over weight.

Being overweight does affect the ultrasound. Are you talking about the 20 week anomaly scan or paying for a private scan earlier?

lunaland · 24/08/2019 16:03

That's interesting to know, thank you.

I know the nhs 20 week scan where I am won't tell you the gender so I will have to have a separate one anyway.

As much as I want to know now I think I might try and be patient and wait till after 20 weeks.
Let's see if I can wait! I have to say being pregnant has slowed down time dramatically.

@leghairdontcare
They won't tell you at the 20 week scan where I am. Very frustrating!

I'd wait OP. I had a private scan at 16w and they said boy. Then at 20w she said girl. Then ended up needing another NHS scan at 22w and she said boy "she thinks". So I think the private scan was probably accurate but if you wait a bit longer hopefully it will be clearer!

lunaland · 24/08/2019 16:20

@KatnissK oh dear! You wouldn't know what to believe in the end would you?!

Yes I think I'm going to wait till over 22 weeks. It does seem to give a more accurate result the further along you are from what people are saying.

I don't know why I care so much, I always said I wouldn't want to find out!

@lunaland I regret the private scan quite honestly! Although it was nice seeing the baby and having some extra scan pics I guess. I don't think I'd bother finding out if I'm ever pregnant again!

When I had my 16 week gender scan the sonographer said if they got a clear view then she was 100% on the sex, either boy or girl.

I have a video of my son in the womb and it is clear he has a penis lol

leghairdontcare · 24/08/2019 16:43

Oh I didn't realise some NHS trusts won't tell you. At ours, they're very clear that's not the purpose of the scan (and I agree) but if you ask they will check. I would probably wait until you're further along then. I had my scan at 18 weeks and they asked me to come back again when the baby was further developed so they could check everything. It was still difficult at 21 weeks but they managed to complete it and find out the sex. They didn't say it was because I was overweight but I knew that was the issue.

Angelinthenightx · 24/08/2019 18:31

Wait until after 20wks getting it too soon may end in it being wrong.

Sheep90 · 24/08/2019 18:33

I had mine today at 16+4 and they got some clear pictures. Sonographer very sure it's a girl. I'm overweight too.

3boysandabump · 24/08/2019 21:37

I didn't have a gender scan just found out at my 20 week scan.

My BMI is 37 I think and you could tell quite obviously that they were boys 😂
