Hi
I’ve just found out I’m pregnant my period was a week late and decided yesterday to take a test so bought cheap £1 ones and they were very strong positives so to double check I tried a clear blue one today and it was the same! A very strong positive.
I was not expecting this or trying at all.
I am due to begin a PGCE in 2 weeks and would be due in April which would mean I’d need to defer or talk to my uni. I am way out of my depth.
I’ve always wanted babies but I wanted to wait another 2 years until I was more financially stable and ready.
Basically I want to know what’s the next step after finding out and if anyone has any advice for someone who is completely overwhelmed by this news.

Teacher here :)

The first thing to do is breathe - it’s a huge shock especially if you weren’t actively trying. First step will be to talk with your partner. Is he earning? Doesn’t he want kids imminently? Do you want kids with him. All those big questions you may or may not have already discussed.

You have choices and can continue with the pregnancy or you could choose to terminate (your early enough). That’s a decision only you can make based on your own morals, financial situation, relationship etc. If you decide to keep the baby, then you should call your GP surgery and ask how to refer to the midwife. If you decide a termination is better, you should call and get a GP appointment.

You can start your PGCE and then stop at a point and then pick it up again the next year. My friend did this after an unexpected pregnancy. You won’t be salaried so will be on Maternity Allowance but if you’ve got a bursary then you could live off that? She said it was difficult but manageable. She then did her NQT part time and is fully qualified and currently on maternity with no3! What I’m trying to say is if you want to continue with this pregnancy, you can still become a teacher.

Happy if you want to DM and talk OP xx

@Keyboard91
thank you for your reply!
Me and my partner have been together 3 years and have discussed having children and getting married, I just didn’t think it would happen so soon it was always in the future, when we were ready 😂 but then again are you ever really ready lol
I have read about some people continuing with their teacher training until a point and then taking time off and picking it up again the year after! Which would definitely be something I’d consider because I don’t want to defer the whole year.
My partner works full time so we have a wage coming in which is a plus. But I’m doing primary pgce so I don’t get a bursary unfortunately!

I think I have a lot of things to think about and consider before I make any major decisions. It just came as such a surprise.. I don’t even think it’s fully sank in yet x
