What to wash newborns clothes with?

Hi Everyone

I’ve seen lots about washing baby’s new clothes before they wear them, which seems to be because they have delicate skin. But what kind of detergent did you use? Just any non bio? Or something more sensitive?

Thanks Smile

I just used my normal washing liquid/softener but I use Ecover non bio which is quite gentle anyway.

forkfun · 22/08/2019 07:34

UK advice is non-bio, but interestingly this is not the advice given in most other European countries, where any detergent or none is deemed fine.

uppershopping · 22/08/2019 07:35

I used the ecover zero I think but mine had eczema

MustardScreams · 22/08/2019 07:42

I just washed dd’s in whatever I was using. Usually Method or Seventh Generation. No skin issues.

Scoobygang7 · 22/08/2019 07:59

@forkfun I believe it's been changed on the nhs to use whatever you'd use for yourself and change to non-bio if there's irritation. So op wash with whatever you'd normally wash your things in.

Interesting. I always wondered why UK advice was different.

First baby definitely needs everything washed in advance in some kind of special, ecological non-bio.

Third baby's clothes are only washed after they've been worn and puked/pooed on, in whatever you usually use/is currently on offer.

DH has excema so the whole family's washing gets done in fairy non bio with no fabric softener.

Yep Grin I did it with the first - I definitely won’t be bothering with all that the second time around. Unless they have an actual skin issue, regular detergent is perfectly fine.

owlofathena · 22/08/2019 13:25

I used fairy sensitive but that's mainly because it smelt so nice! I used it until dd was about four months then started using whatever I normally use (in my case, whatever is on offer)

BigRedBoat · 22/08/2019 13:34

I washed and ironed all of dd1s clothes in fairy non bio. Dd2 wore things straight from the shop and suffered no ill effects! I use whatever detergent we have (which is usually an own brand non bio).

Bol87 · 22/08/2019 14:53

Ha, yes, my first I washed everything in fairy non bio & fabric softener .. this time, I imagine I won’t be so pedantic Grin

I have friends who still wash all new clothes at two years old but I stopped bothering at the 9-12 month stage! And I also switched back to regular detergent as it gets the stains out a lot better! But my little girl has no skin issues thankfully, she’s the least rashy child I know. Never even had nappy rash! So we are lucky in that sense!

Angelinthenightx · 22/08/2019 19:59

Fairy non bio is what i will be using just at the newborn stage once they get bigger i will use any.

HappyParent2000 · 22/08/2019 20:01

They just went in the wash, was I supposed to do something different?

Sooverthemill · 22/08/2019 20:04

Use what you use for yourself. We always used non bio because everyone in our family has eczema and extremely sensitive skin. But until that is the case you don't need to worry

Chloe9 · 22/08/2019 20:06

I use bio in the pre wash, non bio in the main wash and comfort fabric softener. I try not to use bio much because of their skin, but bio and lots of vanish is the only thing thing that gets the stains out (baby poop, toddler poop, grass, paint, tomato based sauces, etc.)

BillywilliamV · 22/08/2019 20:08

Used biological Aerial tablets all through, probably depends on the baby

GivenchyDahhling · 22/08/2019 20:10

Just washed all my newborn and 0-3 month clothes, used Persil non-bio and Comfort Pure fabric softener.

I’m nearly 35 weeks with my PFB and part of me knows that it probably is unnecessary. But the other (full blown nesting mode) part of me just loves holding these teeny tiny clothes which now smell so lovely and clean 🥰

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 22/08/2019 20:10

I used Persil non bio and carried on using that, or Fairy, for their clothes and bedding until the children were about 10 (and they got more sweaty and stinky). If I had something grossly dirty to wash when they were younger, I would pre-soak in bio, then rinse, then wash in non-bio.

MunchyMunchkin · 23/08/2019 08:26

Don’t bother washing them! Then you can still take stuff back and swap for other sizes if baby is unexpectedly big or small.
