New baby - newborn or 0-3m size clothes?

Hi all,

What size are you buying for your baby's first weeks? I don't know whether to buy much in newborn size, or whether they'll grow out of it very quickly...but equally don't want baby swamped if 0-3 m is going to be too big for a newborn.

I realise I might be asking how long a piece of string is, but it's all new to me! Smile

We have some newborn and more 0-3. We figure we will just buy more newborn once the baby is here if it is needed.

Bobbybobbins · 21/08/2019 15:53

My eldest needed newborn as he was 6 pounds then younger brother cane along at over 8 pounds into 0-3. Hard to say til you get the baby!

MustardScreams · 21/08/2019 15:54

Hard to know until you have baby! Dd was in newborn for a good few weeks (6lb 11) so I would get a few of each and evaluate when baby is here. You can always do a online order of more.

My first was in tiny baby as was 6lb and small, he didn’t hit 0-3 months until he was over 3 months old.
I had an indication through growths scans, this time around she’s growing small again so I’m buying small baby things....
I’d wait until you have an indiction from the midwife, if no issues and normal sized I’d buy a few newborn and a few first size then wait for them to arrive

On a related note, has anyone else noticed that not all 'newborn' is the same between brands? M&S seems to be really small compared to others - if this wasn't all confusing enough 🙄

peamad · 21/08/2019 16:01

Definitely dont buy too much newborn. Our girl was 7lb9 but grew fairly slowly so was in newborn for a few weeks. She could wear 0-3 but they were a bit big on her for a while.

Buyitinbamboo · 21/08/2019 16:03

I'd get some newborn. DD was over 10lb and still fit in newborn or up to one month for a week or so. And she really was huge. A normal baby would fit in newborn for a while.

Parker231 · 21/08/2019 16:07

We bought a few each each of the smaller sizes and the newborn lasted for about 3 months (small twins) but at about 4 months they suddenly grew so much longer that DH seemed to always be going via M&S or John Lewis on his way home from work to buy extra babygros.

DerbyshireGirly · 21/08/2019 16:10

Thanks everybody. Will get a mix of both.

Ocado have some really cheap baby Joules in clearance at the moment if that's anybody's cup of tea Smile

M and S and Next do 'up to 1 month' which is somewhere in the middle. My 2 week old was 9.5lb when born and did fit newborn until the last couple of days, but 0-3 didn't look ridiculous either.

mnahmnah · 21/08/2019 16:12

DS2 was huge and couldn’t fit into newborn at all. He wasn’t expected to be hit either, surprised everyone, so you just don’t know what size baby will be. I would buy a small amount of vests and sleepsuits in both sizes from supermarkets so you don’t waste much money if you don’t use the newborn. You can buy more as soon as you know.

mnahmnah · 21/08/2019 16:12

Big, not hit!

namechangedforthis1980 · 21/08/2019 16:17

We bought newborn for both boys. DS1's clothes had to be changed to 0-3 months as he was pretty long , DS2's clothes had to be changed to tiny baby size as he was, er tiny!

Klouise777 · 21/08/2019 16:19

My lo was in 7lb 11ozs and new born was big on him from birth but lasted about 3 weeks if that helps

Fuiseog · 21/08/2019 16:22

I'm aiming for enough newborn stuff to get me through about two weeks, assuming frequent enough washes in that time but without having to wash everything frantically around the clock either, which I imagine is the last thing new parents need.

I was thinking if you take an average of 2-3 onesies/babygrows a day (allowing for having a baby prone to poo-splosions and big milky sick ups), then consider how frequently you think you will do a load of baby laundry, you can work out how many onesies and vests you'll need for approximately two weeks to ensure you always have some clean and dry and ready to go if needed.
(I'm going with two weeks as it seems to be the average time babies in my family have lasted in newborn, and seems to agree with what I have read here also).

I don't want to buy loads and loads in newborn size as I don't want to waste clothes with only one or two wears or none at all - if possible! However, as you said, don't want her totally swamped in 0-3 if she's smaller.

We are aiming to also have about 5 onesies and vests each in 0-3 (just enough for a few days) before she gets here in case she happens to be bigger - that will be enough to keep us going at the beginning anyway, till a shop can be done! Will bring one 0-3 onesie and one 0-3 vest in my hospital bag in case she they are needed and then if so, DH can bring the newborn stuff home and the rest of the 0-3 stuff in and we will have enough to work with in those early days.

Not buying any preemie/tiny baby stuff as most do not need it - I know of course that many do, but most do not and I think in the interest of not wasting money/clothes, it is safe to assume newborn is the standard size (or it would not be called that - though I agree with annoying discrepancies between brands!). If she is really little, she can go in an overly-large newborn onesie to begin and my husband or family can nip to the shops for some smaller stuff. Our hospital is right in the city centre anyway, and the parking is in a shopping centre!

No idea if any of this planning will work, but in theory it makes sense to me!

Lucafritz · 21/08/2019 16:23

Ive got a little bit in each size the 0-3 stuff if huge compared to the newborn and first size so i don't think a small 6lb baby would fit in 0-3 i bought a big 2nd hand bundle that had tiny sizes and first sizes along with newborn so ive got something for every size they might need

CatSmize · 21/08/2019 16:37

I've bought:
3 x newborn onesies (Primark pack: €10)
3 x 0-1 month onesies (Primark pack: €10)
3 x 0-3 month onesies (Asda, cheap)
A large selection of 0-3 month long/short-sleeved vests

I figure that should be plenty as we can go out and buy more when the baby arrives and we know how big he is. I really didn't want to spend a fortune on clothes that won't be worn.

shivbo2014 · 21/08/2019 16:45

I had a baby 6 weeks ago he was 8lb 4oz he was in newborn (up to 9lb or 10lb on the label) for about 3 weeks. Now in 0-3 and filling them out already!

JoJoSM2 · 21/08/2019 17:07

DS was 10lb10oz but not overfat just really big. He was in 0-3 months for 2 weeks, then 3-6months for about 4 weeks.

BarleyG · 21/08/2019 18:22

My daughter was 6lb 15oz and newborn swamped her 🙈

Littleduckeggblue · 21/08/2019 18:25

We used newborn until about 6 weeks and then she went into 0-3.

Fantababy · 21/08/2019 20:34

I found Joules pretty small - bought them for DD as her fancy 'going home' babygrows Blush but they really didn't last her as long as others. She was a nine pounder but fitted in other newborn stuff for a few weeks.

RainOrSun · 21/08/2019 20:38

It also depends on their legs.
My 7lb3 needed 0-3. His 8lb1 brother fitted in newborn......

Amanduh · 21/08/2019 21:33

My ds was 8lb and newborn was still biggish. We had some tiny baby for a while. He didnt wear 0-3 til he was 3 months!
