Extremely swollen hands

Hi, just wondering if anyone else is suffering with extremely swollen hands and whether it's a cause for concern? Or what can be done to help it?

I am 33 weeks and the last few nights my hands have been swelling up so much at night I can't even make a fist - I'm talking giant fluid filled sausage fingers! It's painful but not excruciating.
Is this normal?

The swelling gets abit better through out the day but then every night comes back with vengeance.

I don't have swelling anywhere else - other than some normal and mild fluid retention around face and little around ankles but not overly noticeable.

No headaches or anything - I'm seeing midwife on Friday so blood pressure etc will be tested then - but in the mean time what can I do about my poor swollen hands?

Don't wait, see someone straight away/first thing in the morning. Swelling can be a sign of preeclampsia, which I'm guessing you know already seeing as you mentioned you don't have a headache. I had severe preeclampsia, a bit of swelling but assumed it was normal, went into hospital to get checked out as I had noticed reduced movement. One of the last things I said before getting out of the car..."well I don't have a headache so i don't think it's preeclampsia". It definitely was.

Don't leave it until Friday, get checked out. Hopefully it's nothing but if it is a sign of anything then you can get treated sooner rather than later, and later could be too late for you and/or your baby. Please don't put off getting checked.

My only symptoms of preeclampsia was swelling and protein in the urine. I didn't even get a high bp until a week before induction. Go straight to day unit tomorrow and get checked. Better safe than sorry.

I had swollen hands and it turned out I had pre eclampsia. See a health professional as soon as you can.

Oh wow ok, thanks so much for responding. I assumed as I don't have any other symptoms it couldn't be preeclampsia. I will ring midwife this morning and see if they can see me.

If you didn't even have high BP for a while how did they diagnose preeclampsia? Are there other tests they do? Or did they just monitor you closely for a while? Did you all end up delivering early?

I really do feel fine except these mega swollen hands. But this is a high risk pregnancy, due to my last being born at 31 weeks due to a very erratic heart rate and she was later diagnosed with brain damage due to lack of oxygen to the brain at some point in utero, we have no idea what caused things to go wrong with her so very anxious and very closely monitored this pregnancy - i hope it's just normal swelling but can't take the risk.

Thanks again.

With me I had my midwife appointment at 28ish weeks, and she tested my wee and it came back fine. But we thought my waters had broken so I was sent up to hospital. Not even two hours later it was tested again and there was loads of protein. Had a blood test done and I was told it was preeclampsia - not even a week later I swelled right up. I'll attach a picture of how bad my feet were.

Hope everything's been checked and you're okay by the way!
