Hey!
So I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and was told that my baby was already weighing 5lb 6oz! They didn’t seem concerned about this but I was frightened out of my wits afterwards as this sounds very large for this stage?? Can anyone share their experiences with these growth scans? How accurate are they when estimating the weight? As this is my first baby and it’s safe to say I am very worried about having an extremely large baby! Xx

They aren’t always accurate at all. Many stories on here of people being told baby was tiny and it was huge etc. Don’t worry

I was told my baby would be around 9lbs. He was born at 37+6 and was 6lb 11oz but like you I had had a growth scan around 32 weeks and they had said he was around 6lbs then so obviously not right!

Don't worry about it and baby may not even get to 40 weeks before the birth like mine!

I'm the opposite told me baby was going to be around 5lb was born at 7lb 7 😊

I was told at 35 weeks baby weighed 8lb 3oz and would be over 12 if left to full term. Induced at 39 weeks and he was 8lb3oz 🤦🏼‍♀️

When I had mine they told me they had around a 30% error margin. So when they said he was around 6 and a half pounds what they really meant was that he was between 4 and 8 pounds, which I probably could have told them without the scan!!

As it happens they were quite accurate for me. They said 6lb7 at 39 weeks and he was 6lb 11.5 oz at 40 weeks. But have loads of friends who were convinced they were having huge babies having perfectly average sized ones.

I have also heard people say that sometimes a larger baby is easier to birth because of gravity and forward force. Not sure if this is true or just to comfort people but just about all the people I know who’ve had the most straightforward births have had babies at least 8lb so maybe something in it!

I had my scan yesterday (32 weeks tomorrow) and was also told my baby was on the smaller size (they estimated 4 lb which seems to be the norm for the gestation age!!) They also said there is a 15% margin error. I've read so many stories on here where growth scans have been completely erroneous so I wouldn't worry too much! If you follow hypnobirthing, the mantra there is your baby will come when your baby is ready, and I very much believe in that!

Mine was off the scale and estimated to be about 11-12lbs when born

He was a modest 8lbs
