Recommendations for newborn sleeping

Am not sure about committing to a bedside next to me crib yet. I was looking at a Moses basket which could be used in our room and take downstairs easily for daytime naps. Loads of people say their babies hated a Moses basket though! I saw a Joie travel cot that can be raised up and down and has a detachable changing mat. It looks quite good and ideal that it can be folded away and moved about rooms. It’s just not very pretty 🙈 any recommendations or suggestions?

IMO the Chicco Next2Me cribs are worth their weight in gold. They get baby/ies used to 'bedtime' by putting them in a proper bed at night rather than having them sleep in a moses basket during the day AND at night. My friend has 3 month old twins and the little girl is sleeping through the night already - they have a Next2Me. I'm also expecting twins and will be getting one for sure.

Bbabies grow out of moses baskets very quickly and you're right, some babies don't like them.

At the end of the day, you know what is the best sleeping arrangement for you and your baby. It's hard to know what to do for the best. We plan to have our babies sleep in their pram (carrycots) during the day and put them in a Next2Me at night until they are big/old enough to go in cots.

I just felt the next to me cribs were quite big and bulky and I’d like baby to have their own “space” to make the transition into proper cot and own room a bit easier. I haven’t completely ruled one out though. Just don’t want to waste money on a Moses basket when so many people said they aren’t great. So that’s why I was looking at the travel cot idea.

I've just created a thread asking for advice because DS doesn't sleep well in Moses basket, so in curious about your anecdotal "babies don't like Moses baskets" comment. I had never heard this but it would completely make sense! What is it you've heard? What's the experience of people who've said that to you? Maybe I need to completely sack off the Moses basket!

Also, I have a Snuzpod and have nothing bad to say about it. Baby sleeps well in it, I like the next-to-me element because it means I can give him a quick glance in the night to check he's OK. I wouldn't really recommend moving something about, it's not very realistic IMO. Plus the more things you can safely put baby down in the better! If that makes sense...

Our Next2Me is fantastic. DD is 6 months and still in it, but we detached it from our bed a couple of months ago so it stands on its own. Definitely one of our best purchases!

NewMum54321 · 18/08/2019 12:32

I think the Snuzpods are smaller than most of the other brand ones too

Celebelly · 18/08/2019 12:34

We did use a Moses basket for naps downstairs and she liked it fine, but grew out of it at about 3 months. It was only £40 though. I wouldn't have fancied continually carting it up and downstairs though, although if you get extra bases it's less to carry around.

Summer2019NewMummy · 18/08/2019 12:40

I brought a Moses basket. Baby hates it at night. Will go in sometimes during the day, but not reliably. LO is 1 month old. 10 days ago we invested in a next to me. Wish we'd had one from the beginning! Brought a kinderkraft one, was less than £100. Baby will sleep in it for half the night (would do the other half if I wasn't being lazy and feeding back to sleep in my bed).

bonzo77 · 18/08/2019 12:42

Another vote for the next to me. And for 3 babies who hated the Moses basket. Mine slept in the lie flat push chair or just on the floor on a blanket if down stairs. The next to me can be used as a stand alone crib too if preferred, and will last much longer than a Moses basket.

TwinkleStars15 · 18/08/2019 14:17

I’m baffled by your comment on wanting baby to have his/her own ‘space’...the last thing newborns need is their own space, they need to feel as close to you as possible. Have you read about the fourth trimester?

ParkheadParadise · 18/08/2019 14:23

We had a next to me crib. Also had a sleepyhead. Dd would not settle in the Moses basket without screaming. Used the pram for naps downstairs.

HDready · 18/08/2019 14:27

I have that travel cot. The newborn insert is very flimsy, as is the changing mat part. I wouldn’t recommend it for every day use.

Marty93 · 18/08/2019 15:55

I'm in the same boat as you. Don't want to co-sleep and would like baby to be in it's own space to hopefully make transition into the nursery easier. Just don't know if to get a Moses basket or something more expensive for our bedroom, and a cheap Moses basket for napping downstairs in the day! Argh, so many decisions! Lol! And who knows what the right one is until LO is here! X

Flygirl94 · 18/08/2019 16:11

A vote for the next 2 me crib here, lasted until way past 6 months for DS we used the bassinet part of the pram for downstairs naps
We also have a joie travel cot with 2 levels and removeable changing mat for at the grandparents, if it’s the same one you’re thinking it’s bigger than the next to me crib and a faff to keep moving around

BellaBellaBelle · 18/08/2019 16:22

I’ll go against the grain here and say my dd was fine in her Moses basket, and was in it until 7 months old. She was a fairly small baby though!
This time round i’m looking at the snuzpod though as I think it might be easier to get baby out for night feeds, and more comfortable for me to settle baby whilst lying down. I’ve heard that the snuzpod is smaller than the next 2 me although I’ve not seen them side by side yet!

Lunafortheloveogod · 18/08/2019 16:24

Ds didn’t like rocking pod type Moses baskets (they’re narrower so he could wack the sides as a 6lb baby) and the motion occasionally made him morrow. He went 6 weeks in an Aldi basket on a basic still stand every night and then into his cot... well after we tried the swinging crib that dh insisted on over the £30 more expensive next to me that he hated cause of the motion..

Next to me’s also don’t “fit” all beds if you have a higher mattress it might not be level/safe.

mrsed1987 · 18/08/2019 16:27

My lo slept fine in moses basket until 5 months ols when he grew out of it. We had enough room to just put the cot in our room so that what we did, he is still in with us at the min

CTRL · 18/08/2019 16:29

Both my children slept in my bed with me until they were 3...They both have always slept like babies. The second they are down they are fast asleep until mid morning. And I would be the one to wake them.
Also they both sleep in their own beds now in their own bedrooms and LOVE it. Have never ever had any issues with them settling in their own space.

Each tobthier own though x

minipie · 18/08/2019 16:33

Sleepyhead. I had DD in it on the bed next to me at first, then in cot in our room, then in cot in her own room. So helped a lot with transitions as she always had the familiar sleepyhead. It meant we could bedshare when she was tiny and feeding all the time without me being anxious about rolling on her. It also meant she could sleep slightly angled to one side rather than totally flat which she hated. Fantastic item. I think Cocoonababy is similar (in fact better for refluxy babies) but they outgrow it faster.

Expressedways · 18/08/2019 16:34

Depending on your lifestyle a travel cot is often something you’ll end up using a lot of anyway- if you stay overnight with family/friends a lot, as a safe spot to pop a mobile baby whilst you pop to the loo or cook dinner, if baby outgrows their newborn sleep solution before 6 months and you don’t have space for the big cot in your bedroom. We got loads of use out of ours. You don’t necessarily need some fancy one with newborn insert though.
If your pram has a carrycot suitable for overnight sleeping that’s also a good alternative to buying a separate Moses basket. Going somewhat against the grain here but mine did fine in her Moses basket though and so did lots of other babies I know. It’s definitely not a thing that all babies hate them! A friend spent a lot of money on a snuzpod and baby would only sleep in an Aldi Moses basket, there’s really no predicting it!

MajorFaffington · 18/08/2019 16:57

I agree that Moses baskets aren’t universally disliked by babies! My now 2.5 year old was fine in hers until she outgrew it at around 4 months.

I am now expecting again and did consider the Next2Me because of the closeness it allows, but they are a lot of money, particularly when they aren’t mobile for downstairs naps and we’d probably need a Moses basket for that anyway.

Moses baskets and stands currently on Specialbuy in Aldi for £30 so we have bought one of those.

SallyLovesCheese · 18/08/2019 17:06

We had a free baby box for downstairs naps or the bassinet part of the travel system. Then a next-to-me type cot attached to the bed for night-time(but not Chicco, something cheaper). At 6 months he moved to his own room.

NewMama2Be · 18/08/2019 20:01

We've got a second hand next to me from friends, just bought a new mattress but to be fair our bed is too high to cosleep so will just be using it as a bedside crib.
I was planning to get a moses basket for downstairs but we've ended up with a chicco baby hug 4 in 1 instead. It's on wheels, can be height adjusted and used as a crib from birth then turned into a baby chair / high chair etc. It was more expensive but if we can get use out of it til the little one is a toddler then we thought it was worth a try 🤞

threemonthstogo · 18/08/2019 20:57

To be honest you hear as many people say their baby hated Snuzpods/Chiccos etc too, it depends on the baby. Some find them too large and feel lost in them. And given they cost 150-200 quid whereas a Moses costs 50 (or even less) you waste a lot more money if that is the case.

I have bought a Moses, quite a big one - some are considerably larger than others - so I hope it will last for at least three-four months. To me, having paid around 50 for a good one, that's better than paying 150-300 for six months. Plus you can use it for sleeping elsewhere which is not so easy with the others except Snuzpods.

Of course, my baby could hate it and I'll be looking around for a crib! But that's the chance you take either way I think.

20viona · 18/08/2019 21:47

We have a snuz at the end of our bed which she sleeps well in but from 6am Feed she sleeps next to me in her nest.
