Will I be under consultant after a prem baby?

I had my first at 34+4 for no apparent reason (although I suspect stress related). If I have a second, will I be under a consultant, or will it be a normal pregnancy does anyone know?

My first was premature and I'm pretty certain I wasnt under a consultant second time round. Probably depends on the reason your first was prem?

Sorry just realised you said no reason.

Happymumma29 · 17/08/2019 22:52

Thank you, it was totally unexplained and unexpected. I was well etc. I'd been having back ache and reduced movements, then I lost my plug one morning and my waters went later that day.

I was just like you, 34+0 for no apparent reason (I also suspect stress played a part).

I was technically under a consultant for DC2 but I think I only saw one once, he reviewed my notes said no reason it should happen again and that was it.

DC2 was born at 36+6 so still technically prem but very very different! I had taken extra time off work to keep stress to a minimum, perhaps that helped.

I have had 2 prems and I wasn't under a consultant.

Happymumma29 · 17/08/2019 23:02

Thank you for sharing, i wondered if that might be how it worked. I've heard you're more likely to have an early arrival if you've already had one.

I have a high stress job and I can't do much about it so I'm really hoping to manage it as effectively as I can.

Thank you, how prem were they? Were they unexplained early arrivals too?

I had pre eclampsia first time.

I used annual leave to reduce my hours in the last trimester. Could you do that? Work weren’t overly happy about it but difficult for them to say no given the reason.

Actually thinking about it, I’m not sure whether I was under a consultant with DC2. I did see one who told me unlikely to happen again, but that may have been before I got pg with DC2. All a bit of a blur now.

That's a good idea, thanks. I'll have to give it a try.

I'm hoping that's the case as I know a consultant means a lot more appointments.

Thanks all for your help.

It night depend why they were prem and how prem. I had my first at 30 weeks due to poor placenta, was under a consultant for the second - born at 37 weeks after a placental bleed. Then under consultant for my third - born at 38 weeks.

BalancingStick · 17/08/2019 23:17

My first was born at 35 weeks. Was placed under consultant care for my second but she was emergency c section as breech (I have shit births!)

Montgomerystubercles · 18/08/2019 19:02

I had my first at 34 weeks after my waters went at 30 weeks (no known reason).
Currently pregnant with second and was initially seeing consultant but after 4 visits and no evidence of anything untoward I was discharged back to community midwife.
I vaguely remember the guidelines mentioned premature before 34 weeks as requiring automatic consultant referral for subsequent pregnancy so possibly not.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 18/08/2019 19:29

It really depends on the reason they think you went early- for example, I had my first less than an hour into my 37th week but no reason to think I'd go early again.

Second was 32 weeks, query placental abruption after an accident so no reason to assume biological reason for prem.

Third was 28 weeks, just went into labour (though lots of stress and this was my thrid baby under three).

Baby number four, 8.5 years later I am high risk and whilst I dont have to see the consultant every visit (still havent seen mine actually) as long as my obs are normal, I am under consultant led care. Here (ireland) it means that I will give birth in a hospital and it wont be midwife led.

Thanks all for sharing your experiences. It sound like I'll have to wait and see. I did have a low lying placenta and a bleed at 16 weeks, but nothing was ever mentioned about my placenta when I gave birth. Stress is a problem but I'll do what I can to manage that.
