Just interested to hear what others have with cereal/tea etc.

I’ve been having almond milk for about a week with porridge, I assume this is ok? X

Just have whatever milk you usually have

Kinsters · 17/08/2019 09:12

I guess the main concern with plant based milks would be whether you're getting enough calcium. Not sure if the plant based milks are normally fortified or not.

mistermagpie · 17/08/2019 09:13

Do you normally have cows milk? No reason to change if you do.

BertieBotts · 17/08/2019 09:14

Why are you cutting out milk? There is no reason to.

I’ve had almond milk for a couple for years following an endometriosis diagnosis. The endometriosis severely effected my bowel so suffered IBS symptoms- found almond milk helped things. I don’t follow a strict dairy free diet, I just prefer almond milk with cereals and hot drinks. X

Drink that then

Kinsters · 17/08/2019 09:35

Yes, drink the almond milk then. If I were you I'd look at your diet and make sure it contains enough calcium and take supplements if not, you need plenty in pregnancy else the baby will take it from your teeth and bones. I'm really paranoid about not getting enough calcium! You can have too much though so don't go too far in the other direction.

leasedaudi · 17/08/2019 09:37

Dietician assured me that all milk alternatives are fortified and have to meet minimum standards for iron and calcium (my child is milk intolerant). Maybe check the side panels to be sure but they're better than I thought.

Kinsters · 17/08/2019 09:53

Ah that's good, I guess it makes sense to fortify them.

BertieBotts · 17/08/2019 11:54

Ohh doh - sorry - blame early morning brain :o I think almond milk is absolutely fine. It would be rice milk if anything you would need to watch out for.

dementedpixie · 17/08/2019 11:57

Rice milk is also fine

Bambamber · 17/08/2019 12:51

Almond milk is absolutely fine, I also like a bit of oatley (especially the chocolate one).

leasedaudi · 17/08/2019 18:06

I think rice milk is unsuitable for young children due to arsenic levels, not sure about pregnant mums. I can recommend Oatly barista- I can't tolerate the taste of cows milk now! 😆

aliensprig · 17/08/2019 21:37

Plant milks are fortified with calcium, you don't need cows milk (no one does, except calves). Oatly barista, tofu and leafy green veg like kale and greens are all high in calcium too.
