Can you starve the baby out?

I've read that labour is triggered when the baby's energy demand exceeds what the mother can supply. If we accept this theory (and it's not the only one), does it follow that fasting would encourage them to take the plunge?
Given how desperate most women are to try anything to get it over with beyond a certain point, I'm surprised I can't find any discussion of this idea. There's a bit of research and chat around whether it's safe to fast for religious reasons during pregnancy but that's it.
Obviously once labour starts you need all your energy, so for this or other reasons it might be a terrible idea. I'm just curious if anyone has any thoughts.

OP posts:

I don't think so! The baby will just take all it can from you and you are the one who will suffer if you don't eat properly not baby!

Breathlessness · 16/08/2019 17:08
Hmm
AmIThough · 16/08/2019 17:12

Not eating causes ketones which stops labour.

You also need all the energy you possibly can during labour.

Don't be ridiculous.

SlowMoFuckingToes · 16/08/2019 17:19

Dear lord, of all the batshit ideas out there. You and the baby need the nutrients. Please don't fast! The baby will come when the baby is suppose to!

EskewedBeef · 16/08/2019 17:21

You've got a baby mixed up with a tapeworm.

BrunettesDoItBetter · 16/08/2019 17:22

Wtf

GummyGoddess · 16/08/2019 17:31

If that were true then women with hyperemesis would all be at risk of having premature babies.

BecauseItIz · 16/08/2019 17:34
Hmm
HJWT · 16/08/2019 18:08

I really hope this is a joke 🤦🏻‍♀️

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 16/08/2019 18:39

@EskewedBeef hahahaha that made me laugh! Grin

No OP that theory would not work. There's plenty of whacky ideas of getting labour started but this has got to be the worst!

howdyalikemenow · 16/08/2019 19:07

Your op is really quite unpleasant. Don't be ridiculous. My (albeit limited) knowledge of religious fasting is that pregnant women are exempt.

Please tell me you're not the pregnant woman?

melissa1215 · 16/08/2019 19:11

I've heard it all now... Hmm

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 16/08/2019 19:13

Women all around the world are pregnant whilst starving. They birth full term, healthy babies.

Summerunderway · 16/08/2019 19:15

Bit like the logic I have heard that womem smoke to ensure a small baby therefore an easier labour... Bonkers.

Cohle · 16/08/2019 19:21

What a truly shite idea.

IfThisWasOurHouse · 16/08/2019 19:43

@EskewedBeef GrinGrinGrin

Babyg1995 · 16/08/2019 21:45

Oh dear you have got to be kidding even if it did work it's utterly stupid.
You would have a hellish time of it in labour if you have starved yourself please don't try it never heard anything like itConfused

Iggly · 16/08/2019 21:46

You won’t be pregnant forever.

You need a decent amount of energy for labour and post labour recovery.

Eat.

BikeRunSki · 16/08/2019 21:49

If that were true then women with hyperemesis would all be at risk of having premature babies.

This is what I was going to say

ChrisPrattsFace · 16/08/2019 21:52

At 37 weeks, still loosing weight and not eating due to hyperemesis - that would mean I would have starved my baby out by now.
So no, you can’t.

Tini17 · 17/08/2019 05:54

Where have you read that OP? 🤔
But no. Please don’t try it. Silly, silly idea. Both baby and you need energy for labour. There are plenty of less harmful ways of allegedly starting labour.

Knitclubchatter · 17/08/2019 06:02

Exceeding energy demands compared to intake refers to the placenta, it begins to break down and calcify at a certain stage.
Not your food intake. Not eating adequately probably would lead to loss of your teeth and decreased bone density. Probably affect the baby’s ability to tolerate the stress of labor, probable increased morbidity.

Newbie1981 · 17/08/2019 06:13

What a stupid and selfish idea! Be careful with your baby! Patience is all that is needed here!

aliensprig · 17/08/2019 07:59

OP was literally just asking if anyone had heard of this and had better knowledge of it, there's no need to be bitchy towards her.

ThePolishWombat · 17/08/2019 08:04

I’d guess not.
Women managed to conceal pregnancies and give birth full term in places like Auschwitz - I’d say there’s not much weight to the “starve the baby out” theory Confused
