Scheduled c section as breech but do they check if baby has turned?

Hi all, I’ve been waiting for twin 1 to turn from breech to head down and she’s just not playing. Twin 2 is head down but not presenting. We’re scheduled for c section on Wednesday 21st. Will they check on Wednesday if by some miracle she’s turned head down and let me try a vaginal delivery?

I know someone who was given the option on the day of their caesarean as baby was now head down so I think they do.

My mum works in maternity as a recovery nurse. She said in her hospital they scan on the morning and if baby has turned you get the option of continuing with the section or going home to wait for labour.

I was scanned prior to a booked c-section for a breech baby, she was still breech so c-section went ahead. If she had turned, I would have been given the option of waiting to have a vaginal birth or just to go ahead with the c-section.

How many weeks are you?

TontoM · 16/08/2019 13:02

@Teddybear45 36 + 5

Yep this happens to me and my baby had turned! I hear it’s very rare tho! X

Klouise777 · 16/08/2019 13:07

I was 42 breach literally right before they took me down for surgery they did a ultrasound to check position. I'm not saying they do that with everyone I don't know but I remember the Dr saying he needed to check the position, mine was elective. I had a ultrasound literally the night before too

MaudebeGonne · 16/08/2019 13:13

Where I work they scan prior to going to theatre. If the baby has turned and is no longer breech they will not operate and women go home and await spontaneous labour.

Teddybear45 · 16/08/2019 13:25

Hmm... I think at 35 weeks and with twins they may perform the c-section any way. My friend had a similar situation and they didn’t bother with the scan - they decided the babies would come out at 34 weeks no matter what.

TontoM · 16/08/2019 13:59

Well they can’t make me do anything 😂 that’s assault.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I’ll ask them to do it. I’m in Tuesday for the bloods etc so I’ll ask them then and explain that I’d still prefer a vaginal delivery if at all possible and a scan before is what I’d like to be sure.

They’re Di Di twins with no medical complications (other than positioning) so there’s no rush to get them out.

Hi, congrats! I am 13 weeks with DCDA twins and had a meeting to go over all my questions with the consultant last week. She said if you get to 37 weeks (well done you!) they would schedule the section so it’s booked in, but would offer a scan and if twin 1 is head down they can then induce instead if you want and go for vaginal delivery. But if the scan showed still breach or transverse they have to do the section. It’s all still very fresh in my memory haha! Very best of luck, whatever happens xx

boodles101 · 16/08/2019 15:16

TontoM I'm 36 weeks with DCDA twins and having elcs on Monday. Both mine are currently head down but at my pre op assessment today they explained they would still check on Monday beforehand to make sure of position etc.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 16/08/2019 18:55

Have you had a previous C-section, OP?

I'm pregnant with Di/di twins and my OB said I will definitely need a C-section because I previously had one with my DS. Induction is dangerous with twins if you have had a CS before. (To be fair, I have no interest at all in a vaginal birth but just thought I'd mention in case this is a factor in your doctor's advice.)

TontoM · 16/08/2019 19:30

@lifesnotaspectatorsport no. First birth was vaginal at 41 weeks with my son.

It’s not the end of the world to me if we have a c section but with a 2 year old at home I’d rather have a quicker recovery time. Also getting a bit stressed with the whole 37 weeks is term thing. With them being Di Di I feel like as long as they’re growing and okay what’s the rush 🤷‍♀️
