Low lying placenta

I just had a midwife appointment today and was told I have a low lying placenta that is close to the cervix. This was known from my ultrasound at 19 1/2 weeks. I think she said it was 1.5 cm away at that point. I’ve researched a bit and it seems like a lot of the time the uterus growing will move the placenta away. I’m very scared of surgery, the thought of it makes me feel really sick so I’m desperately hoping to avoid a c section. Also I’m a single mum so will need to get on with things after the birth without another adult in the house. In my job I do a bit of lifting but have been told to stop immediately, which I will do. I just wanted to hear others experiences who have been through a similar thing

I had a low lying placenta. At my 20 week scan it covered my cervix completely. I got regular scans and by 38 weeks it’d moved enough to allow a vaginal delivery. If yours is already not covering your cervix I think you’ll be fine for a vaginal delivery.

I had low lying placenta at 20 weeks. The midwife advised me if I have any bleeding I need to get checked ASAP as they need to determine where it would be coming from. Had a scan at 32weeks and it’s no longer low lying. They did say to me it’s pretty common and very few remain low so try not to worry too much.

That must have been a relief for you! Thank you for telling me. I’ve been looking online and the statistics for having a vaginal birth with no major issues seem good but I’m still a bit freaked out at the moment and half expecting to see a bleed because they told me to watch out for that. Thank you

I too had a low lying placenta, they rescanned me at 28 weeks and it had moved 😊

Same here - low lying placenta touching the cervical OS at 20 week scan, by 32 weeks it had moved well away from the cervix and I’m all set for a vaginal delivery. My midwife told me that 9 times out of 10 if it’s touching or near the cervical opening then it’ll move away eventually. I was told to avoid sex and heavy lifting and to report any bleeding immediately but other than that, not to worry.

I had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks, went for a scan last week at 32 weeks and it has moved and no longer an issue ☺️

I had low lying placenta at 19 weeks, by 21 weeks it had moved enough it wasn't an issue. Most move out of the way.

Low lying placenta completely covering internal os at 20 weeks; rechecked at 26 weeks and still covering os. At 30 weeks checked again (as was going away and needed up to date info in case admitted to hospital while away) and had moved but was still leads than 1cm away from os. Consultant told me this week (33 weeks) that it may still move a bit but, as I’m having a section for other reasons, it’s all rather academic and only an issue now if I start to bleed or go into spontaneous labour.

I had a low lying placenta with my previous pregnancy at 20 weeks by 30 it had moved completely. We were told it’s such a tiny percentage that don’t move by the time your full term.

Mine was low lying at 20 weeks and had moved right up by my first growth scan around 28 weeks. I can't remember percentages but the odds are hugely in your favour that it will move up.
