Changing bags - recommendations?

I just wondered if anyone could recommend a changing bag?! I’ve seen so many about but not sure what’s the best one ... either rucksack or a handbag.

I’m 17 weeks and want to slowly start getting things to spread the cost out.

Thank you! Smile

I'm thinking of this one. Seems to tick all the boxes for me.

Don’t overthink it, just get a sizeable bag you like the look of and then a separate changing mat that includes a pouch for nappies from Amazon. I use a large Longchamp pliage with a luggage strap.

Celebelly · 14/08/2019 17:44

We have that one @Squiff70. It's brilliant. It's like a tardis! Some of my friends have replaced their expensive bags with it after seeing it at baby classes.

HJWT · 14/08/2019 17:49

Similar to what @Squiff70 suggested but I much prefer the opening on this one.

The one above is hard to close when full one handed, has it with DD.

Handbag version would be Pink Lining Yummy mummy bag.

Anything with lots of pockets 😁

That's really good to know @Celebelly. Will it contain all the paraphernalia for two babies do you know? I'm expecting twins.

Celebelly · 14/08/2019 17:50

I'd think so. Ours is less than half full and that includes a change of clothes and cloth nappies which are bulky. It is a bit of a pain to shut one handed though as PP said, that's probably it's only negative.

Celebelly · 14/08/2019 17:52

But the flip side is that the way it opens makes it really easy to see inside and get stuff out without having to pull everything out.

blueskiesbrighteyes · 14/08/2019 17:59

Definitely a rucksack. So much easier when you need to carry baby somewhere, and you can use it when baby is in a sling - distributes the weight much better than a shoulder bag. I bought a £70 StorkSac shoulder bag but ditched it for a £25 rucksack from TK Maxx which is SO much better

Squiff70 · 14/08/2019 18:00

Excellent, thank you.

My DS is almost one and I’ve started to trade in my Cossatto nappy bag for a leather backpack.

In picking a nappy bag I’d think about the following:

Who will be using it?
Just you, DP, your parents etc. If a bloke will be using it some of the time maybe go for something less handbag like or neutral colours (if your tastes run to florals and the men in your life can’t pull it off!). Also if any of them have back or health issues and will be using it a lot, a one shoulder style may be difficult.

How long do you want it to last?
At first baby clothes are tiny, nappies small and toys are simple. At about 6 months when weaning starts you’ll need to add lunchboxes/Tupperware/giant bibs etc to the bag so you’ll need something that can fit those things. At 10/11 months more toys are needed to distract and entertain, plus the clothes are bigger! I was surprised that the bag got fuller the older the baby grew, I assumed that having a tiny baby required more kit but I was wrong!

Are you going to be walking/driving more?
I know that sounds mad but I walk everywhere when it’s just me and DS and I found the handbag style bag that goes on the shoulder just slips off and weighs you down. Fine when the basket of the pushchair is empty but when it’s full, you’re stuck carting it around. If you intend to walk a lot, a backpack may be comfier.

Just some things to consider when choosing one. Have fun getting everything ready for your little one.

Ah that’s amazing thank you for your help all!

I saw those ones on amazon but because they were so cheap I was a bit cautious but good to know they’re recommended!

I’d go backpack! I have the Storksak Charlie which is pretty ugly but good. I had a Storksak Noa for my first and the shoulder bag style just became impractical.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 15/08/2019 07:28

Meant to add that Storksaks are good quality. 2 years of daily use and both mine as still as new.
I also have a Jujube Be Right Back which I mainly use for holidays/flights, the pockets/compartment please me hugely

ArtichokeAardvark · 15/08/2019 07:33

Another one saying going for a rucksack. I have a storksac Noa shoulder bag which does the job but somehow fills up incredibly quickly even with stuff for just one child. I'm expecting no.2 and think I'm going to swap for a great big bottomless pit of a rucksack instead.

8by8 · 15/08/2019 07:53

I just use a normal backpack.

You can get folding changing mats with space for nappies and wipes from jojomamanbebe or skiphop, maybe get a wet bag in case any clothes get mucky, then chuck them in the bag.

Parker231 · 15/08/2019 07:55

Don’t buy a brand name, just look in the supermarkets or Amazon for a cheap practical rucksack.

YoooHoo · 15/08/2019 09:34

I have a babymel backpack, it's fab!

Angelinthenightx · 15/08/2019 15:47

i only like pink lining ones im getting another for this baby.

Parker231 · 15/08/2019 18:22

Do people buy a new bag for each baby? Everyone I know reused the rucksack they had for baby one.

HJWT · 15/08/2019 18:42

@Parker231 its been 2 years since I needed a changing bag, I didn't keep it.

SinkGirl · 15/08/2019 18:46

I had Pacapod bags (the biggest ones) when my twins were small and it’s so handy having the little pod with nappies and wipes in. It was fine when they were in the buggy but now I need a backpack.

I have the Lekebaby one linked above and it’s perfectly big enough for twins but it is really hard to close one handed

ArtichokeAardvark · 15/08/2019 19:40

@Parker231 I'd happily keep my current bag except it's hard enough to fit everything for one child into it - two will be a nightmare!

AprilFernLouise · 15/08/2019 20:58

I keep looking at this one as it's less than £20 but then I think is that too cheap?! Haha cant win! www.gogroopie.com/all/1qvjhm91awp/_ggfb_74OC_ggpage_60793?ad=6136750289332

I have just bought this one Baby Diaper Bag Backpack, Multi-Function Waterproof Maternity Nappy Bags with USB Port for Mom & Dad, Large Capacity, Gray www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07Q1YGRH2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jNBvDbVWB5K6J?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Haven't used it yet but think I will love it, it is so spacious! I have gone backpack to have free hands, love that it has so many compartments and that the top is fairly rigid when open so should make it easier to pack and find things.
