Cyclizine, HG, and dehydration

Hello all,

I’m hoping someone on here is able to share stories (happy for both good and bad) of using Cyclizine when having HG or Morning Sickness.

I have had 24/7 nausea, exhaustion and woozy feeling since 6 weeks, I’m now 18 weeks and seen multiple docs and mentioned it to midwife numerous times but no one seems to take me seriously when I say how poorly I’m feeling, they just say, oh it’s morning sickness and cos you've still got it now, will probably have it all the way through and to just cope with it.

Anyway, today I managed to speak to a new doctor who refused to test myburine for dehydration but has prescribed me cyclizine, to be taken 3 times a day but said they will most likely make me feel more sleepy and add to the woozy feeling.

Has anyone else been prescribed them, did they work? How did they make you feel?

I’m struggling to cope, all of the “safe” foods I could eat I can no longer eat due to GD diagnosis too. So I’m forcing GD friendly food down and sipping water spending the day heaving because I know I have to eat and drink.

I guess it doesn’t help that I’m also still working full time and have a toddler to look after too.

Is there anything I can do to help it, should I speak to EPU about my dehydration concerns? Should I take the cyclizine?

Thanks for your help in advance xxx

I'm on cyclazine, its the only way I can keep anything down.

The drowsyness is a common side effect but the gp says its better to be drowsy and keep food down than throw up all the time. Can you get signed off work? I've been off for 6 weeks as I can't concentrate at all due to the medication.

I had for my second pg, as I had really bad sickness 24/7 with my first. It took away the constant nausea, although I was sick a few times. I did feel like a zombie most of the time, but could look after my toddler which I couldn't have done without it. THe sleepiness did wear off after a week or so.

You have my sympathy, OP - HG is utterly awful.

I was prescribed Cyclizine, and it did nothing to help me at all. I notice a PP finds it helpful, which is a good lesson - not all anti-sickness drugs suit everyone, and there are lots available. So if is it doesn't suit you (either because it doesn't work, or because you can't manage the side effects), go back and ask for something else. I had metaclopramide, which worked well for me, but there are plenty more besides.

Another here who's on cyclizine, I've had it for all 3 of my pregnancies. It takes the edge off the nausea for me but does tend to make me sleepy which isn't good if you have other children to look after.

Cyclizine has done the trick for me. I use it with another antiemetic and feel so much better. It doesn't make me drowsy, either. I'm hoping it stays effective!

I’m on cyclizine and prochlorperazine. I find it takes the edge off a little but still have nausea and vomiting, it makes me drowsy and have been signed off work for last 4 weeks. I have also tried metoclopramide but had some bad side effects. Hoping it lifts a bit as I come to end of first trimester.

Newyearsameoldshit · 12/08/2019 18:26

I found cyclizine helpful. It made me pretty sleepy for the first 3 days or so, then my body adjusted to it and it wasn't too bad at all. No wooziness.
I still felt sick and it didn't stop the vomiting 100%, but enough to get me back to work and feeling halfway human.

I had severe sickness with my last pregnancy to the point I lost half a stone and I was so dehydrated they wanted to admit me into hospital. I convinced them to give me cyclizine to try which they gave me 24 hours for it to work otherwise I had to go in. Within half a day I was able to eat and drink and felt soooo much better. And don’t remember any nasty side effects just the relief of being able to tolerate fluids and eat something.

Go over to the hyperemesis thread run by LucindaE

Cyclisine is a first line anti emetic and may help. FWIW I weighed nearly 2 stone less at full term, and was on seven different types of anti emetic over the nine months, none of which put me anywhere to close to normal

Google green top guidelines on hyperemesis for how your gp should act

You want ondansatron! I cannot recommend it highly enough, but it's a bugger to get prescribed as it's expensive. It's brilliant and the only thing that saved me from spending the whole of my pregnancy with DD2 on a drip! If you don't get on with the cyclizine ( it did nothing for me) then ask for it from your GP. It might help if you cry a bit too... it worked for me! Grin

What the above poster says. You need ONDANSETRON! it's really for people suffering from sickness & nausea from chemo.

TalentedMsRipley · 12/08/2019 19:11

But is brilliant, & saved my life, I think.

Em39ma · 12/08/2019 21:43

I can’t function at all without cyclizine, I had basically stopped eating because everything made me so ill. Ordinarily was taking 3 times a day, now take once in the morning and if having a bad day another late afternoon.
It hasn’t made me sleepy at all and I suffer from allergies so they thought they would definitely effect me, but have been ok.
They take about a week to really start feeling the difference.
