Anterior placenta

Can anybody tell me if they feel their baby move with an terror placenta and when and how often. I am 19 weeks pregnant just found out I have one and the sonographer said it will be difficult to feel the baby until later on and then some people have said they didn't feel at all. Any advice would be much welcomed x

I think I was about 23/24 weeks when I felt proper movement, not just flutterings. I usually feel more after hot/cold drinks, sugary food and in the evening time, but everyone will be different. I wouldn't compare when and how often with other people, as my midwife keeps saying: "it's what is normal for you".

Retraintoday · 09/08/2019 16:50

I had an anterior placenta. I felt movements very early. At 17 weeks. My husband also felt the movements at 18 weeks with his hand on my tummy.
Smile everyone is different though.

I'm very slim, so that could be why we could feel earlier.

bluemarie87 · 09/08/2019 16:51

Sure you are aware it should say with an anterior placenta**

Anyway, I haven't felt any flutteirngs yet so just want an idea that's all :) xx thanks for the reply.

I have an anterior placenta this time and had two posterior ones in my last pregnancies so I have a direct comparison.

With this one I feel pretty regular movements now, my husband can feel them by putting his hand on my belly and I just took a video where you could see the movement through my t-shirt (I'm bored!). I'm 23 weeks and had felt nothing at all until 20 weeks really.

In both my previous pregnancies I felt definitive movements at 17 weeks, so there is definitely a difference.

unexpectedthird · 09/08/2019 17:19

I have felt movements from very early on and have an anterior placenta. This baby is never still it seems.😂🙈

It has made it a bit harder for the midwives to work out how the baby is lying but otherwise it's been no different to my previous pregnancies.

AllFourOfThem · 09/08/2019 17:20

From 24 weeks you should feel the baby move in a regular pattern regardless of the position of the placenta.

basicwitches · 09/08/2019 17:22

I have an anterior placenta and have been feeling movements since about 19 weeks, everybody is different though

rubyroot · 09/08/2019 17:26

I think its different from everyone. I felt movements from 15 weeks onwards with anterior

LauraPalmersBodybag · 09/08/2019 17:28

Not true @AllFourOfThem I had an anterior placenta and the movements were certainly not in a regular pattern, which was stressful but ultimately fine.

Op, I didn’t feel a thing till 20 weeks and it did change day to day. Some days were great and I felt lots, others, the movements felt were unpredictable, infrequent and sometimes I wouldn’t feel much for a long time. On quiet days I had to do lots of checks, counting movements, calling in, i was monitored and scanned a fair few times too. Wasn’t great, but the MW were lovely and my dd was absolutely fine, but her placenta cushioned a lot of movement and left me guessing.

Just go with it and don’t listen to people of an older generation who tell you ‘not to worry’ and to ‘get on with your day’ or ‘get some sleep, you’ll feel more tomorrow’ (looking at you, DM & MIL).

StarlightIntheNight · 09/08/2019 17:36

Ive had one twice and I felt mine early on. I felt movement from 14 weeks....but that was only the odd movement every few days...maybe even just once a week. I am on third pregnancy with second one having an anterior placenta, so I know what to look for. Its very easy to miss. I only feel her move at night. I started feeling movement daily from 19 weeks and that is only when I lie down. I have even seen my belly move when lying down when she moved it. Its not really her kicks I feel, but her head when she moves. As when I did the 20 week scan, I saw her head was on the very spot I felt most movements. During the scan when she moved, I also felt her move so I was spot on with the movements. When you are in bed and its quiet, try to pay attention and you might be surprised you can notice the movements.

AllFourOfThem · 09/08/2019 17:38

@LauraPalmersBodybag having been high risk after a neonatal death, I saw more than 20 different consultants and was under the head of fetal medicine at my hospital and every single one of them told me this. I know because I constantly asked because I was worried and they consistently gave me additional checks and scans each day that the movement pattern differed. So whilst you may have felt differently, I have given the medical advice and anything differing to this should result in a trip to the planned assessment unit for a check n

NotSoThinLizzy · 09/08/2019 17:42

I was about 20 weeks I can feel baby more in my sides rather than my front I can see when hes kicking my front though

Lou573 · 09/08/2019 17:44

I had one and I did feel movements quite early but much less intensely than with a posterior placenta. It also made it possible for baby to get into a position where I couldn’t really feel much for hours at a time which was tedious to get checked constantly.

rubyroot · 09/08/2019 17:45

@AllFourOfThem sorry for your loss. You're right it's best to be cautious and I actually went into hospital for excess movement. I was in hospital about 5 times in the end to have movements monitored as my baby was so irregular with movements, I could have gone in so many other times, but I actuly felt a bit silly in the end. The staff were fine and said I did the right thing though.

However, I thought the advice was to count kicks from 28 weeks?

bobble53 · 09/08/2019 17:46

I have an anterior placenta but I feel baby all the time and did so from about 18 weeks x

mistermagpie · 09/08/2019 17:47

I saw my midwife last week and she said not to expect a pattern until 28 weeks.

bumblingalonghappily · 09/08/2019 17:58

I have an anterior placenta and started to feel pokes/kicks from around 21 weeks. He very much skipped the 'fluttering' stage.

Regarding movement, I went into triage this week as hadn't felt him move all day- I'm still before 28 weeks and they were very glad I had come in (baby was fine though!)- they said if you notice any change in pattern at all, no matter how early to go in and get checked, even if that means going in 2-3 times a week.

EscapeTheOrdinary · 09/08/2019 17:58

I felt the first movement around 20 weeks but it was only noticeable as I had my hand in the right spot at the right time. They didn’t become obvious to me until around 24 weeks

AllFourOfThem · 09/08/2019 18:08

I understand that generally hospitals will only do a CTG from 28 weeks but from 24 weeks your baby is considered viable (excuse the awful expression) and your hospital will still see you if you are concerned.

Tommy’s website is a useful reference - www.tommys.org/pregnancy/symptom-checker/baby-fetal-movements

LauraPalmersBodybag · 09/08/2019 18:39

@AllFourOfThem I’m so sorry to hear that. I guess actually, we’re saying a similar thing. I was just talking about what I was able to perceive as opposed to what the baby was doing.

Fundamentally though, the thing is to monitor and check every time which I think is what we were saying.

Lisalou88 · 09/08/2019 20:36

I have an anterior placenta, this is my first baby so I have nothing to compare it too. I first felt flutters around 21 weeks and then definite kicks movement by around 23 weeks. I was so worried it was going to affect how much I would feel my baby but I am now 31 weeks and feel baby moving constantly with really strong movement x

SilentAlarm · 09/08/2019 20:58

I’m about 23 weeks with an anterior placenta, and have felt movements for the last couple of weeks. Nothing major yet, though, and no real pattern. Seem to be getting stronger now though x

kelly14 · 09/08/2019 21:09

I had an anterior with my 2nd baby ( although had 13 year gap so didn’t remember anything) and I still felt movement quite early on 15-17 weeks and very strong and regulars
I have anterior again this time, and current baby only 17 months so definitely fresh in my mind and this time I didn’t feel any real movement until about 21 weeks and then it was very slight. My midwife told me they were not concerned at all as even with a normal placenta they wouldn’t expect me to be feeling anything until 24 weeks plus ( even though I know I felt baby number 2 much sooner!)
I’m 30 weeks Sunday and although I do few a lot more now it’s nothing like the movement I used to get with my little boy. But been assured all is well and it’s just positioning.

Peachee · 09/08/2019 21:13

Yes me. I’m a first time mom currently 21+4 and haven’t felt anything that I can definitely say was a kick/flutter etc and it’s worrying me. Some days I don’t even feel pregnant. X
