Once breech always breech?

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 12:22

Just had my 28 week appointment and the midwife implied that since this baby is breech and my previous one was too, I should come to terms that it's probable this one will remain this way all the way til due day.

She didn't weight me either, but I guess that's not a big issue. I simply don't want another breech baby after my previous c section almost killed me.

Seems like a pretty dismissive attitude from your MW, to me at least, but I guess she may have experience to suggest that is the case 🤷‍♀️

There are things that can be done to turn baby before term, and it’s not impossible to have a vagina delivery with baby in breech. But forearmed is forewarned. Here’s some info:
www.nct.org.uk/labour-birth/different-types-birth/other-types-birth/breech-babies-what-you-need-know

Maybe you could speak to your MW again about concerns re another CS, or ask to speak to the MW team leader if you don’t feel yours is receptive. Have you had/are you having antenatal classes? There may be experience there who can help as well?

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 13:17

No, I'm not having any classes... and I'm at high risk of rupture. So I've been warned that at any sin of complications I'll get a c section regardless. (The consultant was with two other doctors for 40mins when that was decided).

I’ve had two breech babies. First was undiagnosed until late in labour and ended up with EMCS. Second time round I had a late scan and this baby was breech too. Had ELCS and surgeon told me at the time I have a bicornuate (heart-shaped) uterus which means that the baby gets to a point that it can longer turn as it gets “stuck”. My understanding is that it’s not recommended to try and turn a baby in this instance. Might this be the same for you?

NewMama2Be · 08/08/2019 13:25

Oh god this is giving me the fear!
I'm 32 weeks and breech at the moment but have been told theres still time for baby to turn. I'm preparing myself for potentially needing a section although hearing yours almost killed you is slightly terrifying!!!

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 13:32

@Gluetap I have a tilted one, the midwife thought the shape might have something to do with my breech babies.

My first was breech and never turned. My second had head down by 28 weeks. I asked many times does having one breech mean next one will be and was told no. So I’m not sure about your MW view here.

Gluetap · 08/08/2019 13:35

I was told mine was tilted too (before getting pregnant), I wonder now if it’s to do with the shape of the uterus?

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 13:41

This is the first midwife that understood how serious my csection complications were. The rest seem to just brush them.off as just being "unlucky". I'm terrified of having another one, but there's nothing I can do.

As my mum loves to remind me, I turned two days before she was booked in for a c-section. Apparently, it wasn't very comfortable. There's always hope, fingers crossed for you.

BellaBellaBelle · 08/08/2019 14:17

My dd was breach and turned at around 33 weeks. Although it was uncomfortable when she did turn, it wasn’t awful!

I’d heard about a few tricks to encourage them to turn - sitting on a backwards facing chair (so that your legs are apart and you’re leaving forward), sitting mostly on the floor with legs in a v shape as opposed to lying on the sofa, lots of standing and rocking the hips in a figure of 8 shape. I did lots of this - no idea if that’s what made her turn but something did!

I’d say you still have time for it to happen Smile

namechangedyetagain · 08/08/2019 14:24

My first was breech but turned at 37 weeks if his own accord. Second was footling breech and third was complete breech. I think it's just the way I have babies.

I'm not sure it's a given that your baby won't turn but maybe speak to your midwife/ consultant if you have worries about another section. They should be reassuring you, not making you feel worse!

Aurignacian · 08/08/2019 14:27

Mine turned at 39 weeks so it is possible

HippyChickMama · 08/08/2019 14:31

Have a look at the spinning babies website. Lots of tips on there for encouraging babies to turn.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 14:34

I'm scared to death of another one. I nearly died thanks to a hemorrhage and sepsis. In the end nobody can guarantee that they won't leave some "product" in my womb again.

With my first I tried everything under the sun and even had a failed ECV, I just hope this one turns!

My baby was breech until 34 weeks when she turned.

ZebraMammy17 · 08/08/2019 15:43

I'm 32+4 I'm breech and my midwife and consultant have told me I have till 36 weeks for the baby to turn and if it doesn't they'll book me in for a csection. My first wasnt breech so it's really scary the thought of having a csection and have a newborn and toddler. The reason they are giving me till 36weeks is because I have a bicornuate uterus (heart shaped) and the doctors cant turn the baby because of the shape. I've also heard it being called a tilted uterus.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 15:49

Zebra that's similar to the explanation I got today. That possibly my uterus is in such a shape that it's more comfortable for a baby to stay breech. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. My first felt this way the whole time and never turned. The ECV was not something pleasant either (and it was unsuccessful). They won't see me again until 34 weeks, but she made a note that if still breech by then I'd be scanned sooner because of my previous history.
