Sitting on floor during pregnancy

Hi all,

I've had 2 miscarriages and currently pregnant....some people have told me to be careful and avoid sitting on the floor. Is this complete nonsense? Can sitting on the floor cause any harm during pregnancy?

Considering that women from many cultures around the world always sit on the floor I'd say this was nonsense.

I’ve never heard that; in pregnancy yoga we sat on the floor.

THNG5 · 08/08/2019 08:33

Definitely nonsense! I'm an Early Years teacher so spent a lot of time sitting on the floor during my pregnancies. Never had a problem except getting back up at the end!

katmarie · 08/08/2019 08:37

I've got a toddler, and am 30 weeks. I spend a lot of time sitting on the floor. Never heard anything about it being bad before. Like pp, I do struggle to get up sometimes now!

PotteringAlong · 08/08/2019 08:42

It’s complete nonsense; what do you think the floor will do?!

Falafel19 · 08/08/2019 08:54

Total nonsense.

CalamityJune · 08/08/2019 08:59

"Being careful" about anything is not going to change whether your pregnancy is successful or not. It really is out of your control. As someone who has also had multiple miscarriages before having DS, just try to carry on as you normally would, being healthy and concentrate on taking care of yourself.

My nan used to tell me sitting on the floor gave you piles

I thought that was sitting on radiators Grin.

Knittedfairies · 08/08/2019 09:23

No, sitting on the cold front door step gives you piles.

Falafel19 · 08/08/2019 10:23

How exactly @Knittedfairies??

Hugtheduggee · 08/08/2019 11:05

If it was a problem, then people would only ever have one child, as once you've got a toddler you practically live sat on the floor. Sit wherever you are comfortable and happy.

00100001 · 08/08/2019 11:16

of course it can't.

Why would it?

bouncingraindrops · 08/08/2019 11:18

The floor is LAVA Grin

Knittedfairies · 08/08/2019 12:11

No, sitting on the cold front door step gives you piles.

How exactly @Knittedfairies??

Sorry; of course sitting on a cold step doesn't give you piles. I forgot the quotation marks and the phrase 'my grandma insisted that...'

Today I was told not to stroke my cat as it can increase my risk of miscarriage 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

I came home and cuddled my cat because it is absolutely nonsense. It's not like I'm licking the inside of her litter tray for God's sake.

As long as you know the general rule of thumb on what to eat drink and be generally a little more careful than you usually would.. then dont listen to a thing anybody says.

Especially if they start it with "I read somewhere.." "someone told me.." "apparently...."

Teddybear45 · 08/08/2019 18:57

Lying flat on your back on the floor after 28 weeks is bad. Sitting is fine.

AR23 · 08/08/2019 19:09

Haha thank you everyone for your comments. I did think it was silly but I guess when you’ve had 2 miscarriages you just become a bit scared about anything anyone says. But it’s very reassuring reading everyone’s comments so thank you!

@Teddybear45 it’s sleeping on your back that’s not recommended in the 3rd trimester, not laying on the floor....

Sitting on floor during pregnancy
Teddybear45 · 08/08/2019 19:24

Sleeping in the supine (ie laying on your back) flat on the floor without pillows is what the original study that Tommy’s quoted clearly states increases the risk. This has probably been known for centuries - and is why in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine pregnant women are encouraged to sleep on their left sides.

Blahblahblahnanana · 08/08/2019 19:46

@teddybear45 yes it’s probably better to avoid lying on your back altogether for long periods as it can cause low blood pressure, and the weight of the baby in the uterus restricts blood flow to the heart and uterus and subsequently the oxygen and nutrients to the baby are reduced.
