holiday during pregnancy - my experiences & tips

Just got back from a wonderful 2 weeks in Tobago and survived hurricanne Ivan! (now 28 1/2wks pregnant)

my tips
do a late booking- not had any major probs during pregnancy plus use to long haul flights otherwise would not have gone so far.

when booking mention pregnancy to ensure you can fly with that carrier. Both ways with BA we got upgraded to traveller plus (all I asked at check in on the way back for a seat to easily get in & out of).

Found a lot of travel insurance did not cover me at 28wks+, however AA did

Discuss with midwife/Dr re flight/holiday - I was advised to use flight stockings, took 1/2 asprin, drank only water and fruit juice during the flight.

take a bikini - I took a swimming costume and even in the shade the dark material was hot over the bump - plus it made going to the loo a pain, but managed to borrow a bikini in the 2nd wk

Took plenty of DH t-shirts as I found that clothes I fitted into at the start of the hols were too tight towards the end and avoids buying loads of maternity wear (in last 2-3wks waist expanded 3" and weight increased 2.5kg, but AI may have something to do with this!)

Plenty of high factor sun cream plus deet mossie repelant.

Had hotel with own beach - could sunbathe, lie in the shade or go in the sea to cool down and make bump weightless (enjoyed loads of snorkelling which partly filled in the withdraw symptoms from no diving this yr)

Had a good hotel that was AI (I normally avoid AI) which made life easy, and room with air con & king size bed (ooohh the space!).

I would hightly recommend a holiday - it was a chance for both DH & I to enjoy some quality time together before all mayhem breaks lose in December

Please feel free to add you own tips

Oh yes I am big fan of pregnant holidays! Tbh I didn't really do anything differently, went to upstate NY for a week to a wedding when 28 weeks (and got to drive the bus as there were loads of us, the rest were drinking of course so it all worked out well). Then we came back and went to Ibiza for a week.

I don't remember doing anything different apart from wearing flight socks.

Scubamum I love Tobago, where did you go?

whymummy · 20/09/2004 10:31

Stayed at the coco reef just round the corner from the airport - not a busy airport so noise was not a prob and no flights directly over the hotel. The service was excellent, food on the whole was good (a few of the buffet days had limited choice for non meat/marlin eaters), beat to go AI, the social people are very helpful organising any tours/car hire etc. Main issue was that noise easily came through from the corridor and the adjoining room - although another couple had an end of corridor room that was not adjoining and had no probs.

No kids club but baby sitting service - ok for young children/toddlers where the beach (calm sea with wall protection) can provide enough entertainment.

The Kuoni rep had just start (so may improve) but others had problems with tours they organised with her.

Heard on the plane that the service at the Rex was not good. The chef at the Hilton has just left and the people we met complained about the quality/choice of food, plus on Atlantic side.

The hurricane hit the north atlantic side worse (coco is southern carribean side) plenty of trees/electricity & phone lines blown down). However less than a week later the roads were cleared and they were making good progress repairing/replacing the lines and poles.
