Hi all,
I'm 8+4 (#2) and am really struggling with healthy eating this time around!

Last pregnancy I had sickness, but i could still eat fruit and veg and was really healthy- I actually lost weight in the first trimester I was so into it!

This time around it's another story :( my sickness is 10x worse, I can't keep my pregnancy vits down (so taking just the folic acid) and the thought of veg in particular just turns my stomach. Currently trying to eat some cucumber and it's actually vile :( all I want to eat is breaded chicken, tomato based pizza and jelly sweets.
I haven't touched chocolate in weeks, which is weird for me because I'm normally all over it! Just feeling so bad for my little one - which c

Fat fingers, posted too soon...

*which coincidentally is currently the size of a cola bottle 😂

Any advice?! Any similar experiences? Anything I could try to get myself in a better state?!

TIA :) x

Eat what you can. Sickness in pregnancy can be awful and you really just need to keep your strength up. Hopefully it'll pass soon and you can go back to eating healthily. Tastes do change in pregnancy, I think a common thing is not liking coffee any more but I suppose cucumber could fall into that too!

mummabubs · 07/08/2019 19:48

Honestly I'd eat whatever you can stomach- that's what my midwife told me when I had bad sickness the first time (so my entire first trimester was essentially plain overboiled spaghetti, any fizzy drink and my own body weight in sour sweets!) You can always get back on track if you want to when you feel better x

MrsEG · 07/08/2019 19:54

Don’t beat yourself up and just eat whatever you can. From 6 weeks all I have been able to stomach is bread, salt and vinegar crisps, cheese and pasta. I can’t even think about vegetables! You are not alone. Fingers crossed you’ll feel better in the second tri and can get back to your veggies but for now don’t beat yourself up :) Just try and drink plenty of water too!

Iseethesilverlining · 07/08/2019 19:55

Congratulations! With my first I craved apples, gave up caffeine and ate really well. With my second I craved twixes and coke - it had to be full fat, full sugar as well! I couldn’t keep much else down for the first 12 weeks. Midwife told me it was fine, to eat what I could and not to worry. I managed to start eating pasta and built up from there. I didn’t eat much or well during the pregnancy, so just had to eat what my body could face.

Baby was healthy and happy and is a delightful healthy teenager now Smile! I was back to normal soon after as well. Hope you manage to keep something down soon. Just be kind to yourself and eat what you can.

Ginandgingers92 · 07/08/2019 19:59

Thanks everyone :) really appreciate it :£ hopefully 2nd tri will bring back my iron stomach 🙈

You might need the salt and sugar hence the cravings.

I could only take folic acid before I went to sleep on my first pregnancy because it made me feel so vile. In my second pregnancy I couldn’t stomach it at all so I ate loads of foods with folic acid and vigilance b12- luckily I could hack them (eggs, marmite, brown rice). I’d read somewhere that a lack of vitamin b12 was linked to morning sickness but who knows. Anyway I stuck to those sorts of foods and was much more able to manage it.

I had quite a strict meal regime:

Morning, crackers and water by my bed to take as soon as I woke up.

Breakfast = yoghurt and hazelnuts
Second breakfast = Mac Donald’s egg muffin
First lunch= chicken salad
Second lunch = rest of chicken salad and apples/banana
Dinner= brown rice and vegetables. I couldn’t manage much meat.

I stuck to brown rice for dinner most nights for the first trimester and i felt much better the next morning for it!

Iggly · 07/08/2019 20:09

*vitamin not vigilance 🤦🏻‍♀️

dearn · 07/08/2019 20:41

I was like this in my second pregnancy but once I got to 16 weeks things changed. I literally lived on Maccy D's and pot noodles 😂

Ibizababyy · 07/08/2019 20:41

OP I agree with everything you have posted!! Literally- I am also 8w4d with number 2 and my normally super healthy and organised diet it’ll has gone to absolute shit! It did the first time too but this time I feel a million times worse! I’m on cyclizine which has actually allowed me to eat slightly more pleasant things in the last few days- I managed salad yesterday! I was so proud!

In general though I’m surviving on pepperamis (Confused), salt and vinegar crisps, white bread, chicken super noodles, soup and cheese and crackers! Ocasionally I fancy grapes and tangerines but that’s about it.

I was so determined to be healthier this time and keep exercise up too but I am absolutely floored everyday so can barely manage a short walk. Praying for us both that it improves soon!

Ginandgingers92 · 07/08/2019 21:06

It's so bad isn't it?! I'm sooo tired and know veg will help a bit, but 🤢
A few more weeks and it's that second trimester boost 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

I was exactly the same. The only thing that gave me respite from feeling sick and knackered was when I was eating junk. All I really wanted to do was to graze all day on absolute crap! Crisps, biscuits, coke, crackers, chocolate etc. Once I reached the 2nd trimester it improved massively though so hang in there 😊

Earslaps · 07/08/2019 21:33

I was like this with DS2! I put on 6kg in the first trimester on a steady diet of Dr Pepper, McDonald's, KFC, custard creams and chocolate. I swear ds2's love of chicken is because he had so many visits to KFC in utero! Grin I also could not stand any green vegetables whilst pregnant and he hates green veg!

The midwife said to just eat what I could manage and remember that the baby's needs are prioritised so baby would be fine! And he was.

ELM8 · 07/08/2019 22:56

I had exactly the same.. all beige in the first trimester, particularly breaded chicken and any sort of oven potato (chips, wedges, smilies etc) with the odd post-work pizza thrown in for good measure. Disappeared at about week 13 though and finally managed to start eating like a (semi) normal person (albeit larger portion sizes BlushConfused)

Midwife didn't seem remotely surprised / concerned so I would say go with it!!!

Croquembou · 10/08/2019 00:10

Bit of an old thread but this is so reassuring. All I want to eat is jam doughnuts, marshmallows and salt and vinegar crisps. Why can't this little creature just fancy a bloody salad?!

DerbyshireGirly · 10/08/2019 16:55

I had visions of being super healthy, eating salads for lunch and lots of protein and complex carbs. Unfortunately all I can manage at the moment is "Iceland-style" food Blush. Potato smilies, spaghetti hoops, chicken nuggets etc.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/08/2019 17:20

All I ate was Heinz tomato soup, baked beans and peaches. I swear that's where DS's gorgeous gingery locks came from!

fleshmarketclose · 10/08/2019 17:29

I had awful morning sickness and hyperemesis twice. I tended to eat anything I could stomach. In my last pregnancy the only food I kept down was milky ways and pickled onion space raiders so that's what I ate every day for forty weeks. Dd was fit and healthy weighing 7lb 12oz and I was half a stone lighter than before I got pregnant on my due date and two stone lighter a week later.

WeShouldOpenABar · 10/08/2019 18:18

Once my hyperemises tablets kicked in I thought I'd manage veg but no beige food still reigns, along with anything I'm not meant to have, longing for pate today

Squiff70 · 10/08/2019 18:26

Don't feel too bad. Pork pies and pizza are my best friends right now (I'm 7+2) but I'm interpersing the junk with fruit. I know fruit is high in sugar blah blah but I'm getting some nutrients at least. Just a few grapes or a nectarine here and there.

Hope the worst of the sickness abates for you soon!

Ginandgingers92 · 11/08/2019 21:09

Today i managed some watermelon! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Also saveloy and chips...but watermelon! 😂😂

At the moment the extent of my diet its pretty much beige and carbs. Chips, potato waffles, pizza, crisps and pasties, mc Donald’s breakfasts or nuggets. My last pregnancy was the same though, I could only stomach mc Donald’s big Mac’s from around weeks 6-11 then the morning sickness got worse and then couldn’t eat at all. Luckily I only gained around 10lbs in the whole pregnancy.

mumtobe1984 · 13/08/2019 00:10

I am worried too about my diet! I am usually keto but craved bread, salty crisps and jacket potatoes so bad. I couldnt stomach cheese, avocado's or eggs for weeks. And being so tired in the evenings I've had far too many take aways for convenience, usually Greek food or pizza.... I am now 15 and half weeks and tryin to get more good fats and veg in... Still wantin potatoes though Sad

LiveInAHidingPlace · 13/08/2019 05:17

I ate McDonalds three times a week in the first three months. Every time I ate salad etc I felt sick. I needed carbs.

The main thing is getting enough energy. Don't stress too much about it.

Rememberallball · 13/08/2019 06:09

At that point in my pregnancy we were away on a cruise and I was pretty much living on carbs - breakfast would be a couple of mini croissants and a chocolate muffin; lunch was bread roll with ham and cheese or digestive biscuits with cheese and butter. If I felt ok I would try and manage some meat and potatoes. Some days I’d have a slice or two of pizza or a hot dog with fried onions.

Diner would be soup and bread rolls then I’d order meat or fish and potatoes but the only veggies I could tolerate were peas. I think the poor waiters thought I was a really fussy eater as there was so much gorgeous food available - and, normally, I’d have been eating so much more variety that usual.

Now approaching 33 weeks I am eating far more fruit and veg and there is a lot of variety in my diet but I am managing small portions than your average 4 year old because the babies are sitting up in my ribs!!
