I've recently been diagnosed with a missed miscarriage, I've decided to go down the pill route. Just wondering if anyone did the same and what were your experiences. This was my first pregnancy so I'm a bit out of my depth

I'm sorry you're going through this. This was my experience, I hope it helps.

I was given the first pill at the hospital. Whole process was very quick, I was only there 20 mins or so. They told me this could start the bleeding, but nothing happened for me. I went back to the hospital 2 days later for the 2nd pill. I was given my own bay in a ward with other women who were having the same thing as far as I could tell, but the curtains were all drawn around the bays and I never saw any other patients.

The contractions started quite soon after I took the pill - maybe an hour or so. They were stronger than I had expected, like very bad period pain or very early labour. I started passing blood, then large clots and pieces of uterine lining. The pill made me nauseous, so the nurse gave me something for that, along with some paracetamol and ibuprofen.

There was a toilet to use on the ward which was just for the patients. The nurse asks you to collect everything you pass and I had a natural urge to sit on the toilet during the contractions and that's where I passed the sac. I felt it pop out and it was obvious what it was. I was only 8 weeks along, so it was tiny - 2cm maybe. I didn't find it upsetting to see in anyway and you could just not look if you think it would upset you.

Afterwards, I was absolutely fine physically. I was able to go home about an hour after the procedure. My husband drove me, but I would have been fine to drive myself. I then had about 4 weeks of period-like bleeding. Not particularly heavy and no further pain. Periods returned as normal about 6 weeks after.

Everyone involved was very sympathetic, kind and professional.

I hope that your experience is as good as it can be under the circumstances. Good luck Thanks

Hi @culllllll I'm so sorry you are going through this.

I had a MMC at 9 weeks. Was given pill at hospital and sent home. The actual miscarriage started about 40 mins/1 hr later and took about 2 hours to complete.

It wasn't a pleasant experience but by no means as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Bleeding was heavy until the pregnancy sac passed and then slowed down (continued for about 3 weeks , mostly spotting). Pain wise it wasn't great but I managed with paracetamol and ibuprofen. The pain reduced to pretty much nothing once the sac passed.

Your hospital might be able to give you stronger painkillers.

I was only allowed to go home as I lived 20mis from the hospital and was considered reasonably low risk.

I chose it the first time I had a missed miscarriage and it was such a mistake. I ended up haemorrhaging, went into shock and needed emergency surgery anyway plus a blood transfusion. It was such a mess as well, it looked like a murder scene in the room.

Second missed miscarriage I just had the surgery and it was far swifter and safer, less graphic. I would always recommend surgery.
