Miscarriage rate at 10 weeks

Eggcellent29 · 07/08/2019 11:27

I was told by my doctor that the miscarriage rate at 10 weeks with a clear heartbeat and fetal movement is 15%

This seems high to me! I’m only in my 20s and the baby is measuring perfect etc. Okay it is a general stat but everything else I’ve read puts the risk much lower

I’m interested to hear what other people have been told?

Hi @Eggcellent29,
That seems quite high to me as well. Lots of websites/articles give different stats, but nothing I've read is anywhere close to what your doctor mentions.
Have a look at this website here and scroll down to where it says "Risk of Miscarriage by Pregnancy Week" - it aims to analyse the research out there and present a clearer picture, and suggests a much lower risk.

@coconutlatte44

Thank you. That looks much closer to the information I had! The miscarriage association put the risk at less than 1% - from my experience they are a reputable group so was surprised by my doctor!

The only thing I can think is she was quoting for all ages - so say up to 45 - so it will be higher.

You may find this helpful and reassuring. datayze.com/miscarriage-chart.php

Do you have a condition that might raise the miscarriage risk? Thyroid conditions / clotting disorders / autoimmune conditions can all cause early and late miscarriages.

Eggcellent29 · 07/08/2019 19:09

Thank you @OrangeSlices998

No high risk conditions! Had thyroid tests and they came back clear.

Perhaps she was just being over cautious

Pretty sure it's nowhere near 15% after about 8 weeks!

Eggcellent29 · 08/08/2019 09:04

Thank you ladies! The only other thing I could think was maybe she was quoting for people who haven’t seen a heartbeat. Or maybe she just didn’t know and had a guess Confused

My OH got over excited and told two people in work I was 10 weeks - both then told him their personal stories of losing a baby at this time!!! One Male, one female... couldn’t help but think that was quite insensitive?

WantLifeToBeBetter · 09/08/2019 06:53

From what I've read it's something like 2%
(That's for me - mid/late 30s). It goes down loads once you've seen a heartbeat.

Eggcellent29 · 09/08/2019 08:18

@AlphaLemon Wow, that is very insensitive!!
Also from what I’ve read, when people say they have lost a baby at 10 weeks, often they find out at 10 weeks but the baby passed away earlier. It often seems to be the same at 12 week scans. Not that this makes it any less traumatic in any way, but I’m hoping it means that seeing a heartbeat at 10 weeks and finding out the baby has passed before 10 weeks are very different if you see what I mean?

@WantLifeToBeBetter That’s very reassuring, thank you for sharing.
