Can you call the GP to be asked to be signed off from work due to severe sickness?

Hi. I’m 7 weeks pregnant with my first baby and am having the most horrendous sickness. Its lasts all day, non stop and I have no energy at all. If I try to walk from one end of my (very small) house to the other I get dizzy and have to lie down immediately. I went to the GP last week; he gave me anti-sickness tablets and signed me off work for a week but it ends on Thursday when I’m due to go back.
The anti sickness tablets have not helped at all and I still feel rotten. I’m a full time nurse on a very busy ward and I honestly just cannot even fathom being at work at the moment. My GP is really hard to get an appointment with to talk it through with them again so I was wondering if you can just ring them to ask to extend the sickness note whilst I wait for an appointment. Otherwise I’ll need to go back to work and I honestly just can’t but have exhausted all the time off I can have without needing a GP to sign me off.

Call the surgery and explain. The GP may phone you.

At my surgery you can order a sick note in the same way you do a repeat prescription. You need to go in and fill out a form. Maybe get someone to do it for you if you feel too rotten. I had HG so I know how awful it can be. Call your Early Pregnancy Unit if you’re throwing up water. I couldn’t keep anything down and often ended up on a drip to keep me hydrated. Good luck.

Yes you absolutely can.
Look up the hyperemisis support thread on the pregnancy board for help and support, as well as visiting the Pregnancy Sickness Support website.
You might need to try a few different medicines before finding one that works, but until then, rest, put yourself first and just stay hydrated.

Yes!

I was signed off for 4 months with SPD. As it was clearly something that was only going to be better by giving birth - my GP was would supply a new one as soon as I asked for it.

Yes you should be able to. When I Had HG , I'd call the surgery and the receptionist would pass the message to the GP who would then do it for me and my partner would collect it.
