I am almost 12 weeks and haven’t even been able to see a midwife yet!

Hi all. So I am 11 weeks today. I just changed surgeries and immediately after I had joined I wanted to book in for the midwife. But their way of doing things is dropping in a urine sample as proof you are actually pregnant, waiting for the results of that test, and then they will refer you to the midwife.
Well I dropped in my sample a week ago, it was supposed to take 48hrs to come back. I kept checking online and nothing so I rang today and yes, the results have come back ok but they haven’t even filed it or contacted the midwife yet?! When I am supposed to call her if I have been waiting for longer than a week?!
I NEED to see one ASAP because I know I won’t be able to get a scan straight away. That’ll take another couple of weeks at least.

I had trouble with my previous surgery too. Because I had fallen pregnant within a couple of weeks after a miscarriage and obviously hadn’t had a period in between, they couldn’t accurately date it. I knew my exact dates and clear blue confirmed this for me. I said this and the midwife just said ‘oh, well, I think we should put you down as just 1-2 weeks pregnant and I’ll see you soon to see how you feel’ (when I was 5-6 weeks!) and didn’t even have me booked in until I would have realistically been about 13 weeks. So she didn’t listen to me. I know my body and I have suffered 3 miscarriages before and with each of them, I have gone back to my normal periods straight away so I know it wouldn’t have been a problem. This is why I dated it from my miscarriage date, as it was coincidentally the same date as my period was due. And don’t worry I did go to the hospital for the miscarriage and got it all on record, so it wasn’t just my period.

Sorry for the long mess of a story, but, what do I do? Anything? Can I go to the hospital, like a walk in thing? I don’t even know. This is my first baby, and first pregnancy that is actually going really well (I’ve never made it this far! And never been this violently sick etc! Lol) so I just want to know everything is ok.

Please help. Thank you xx

Hi Op I would personally phone the drs surgery back and keep chasing them to get you seen by midwife slightly different where I am you don't even need to be seen by dr to prove your pregnant you just phone surgery and they get midwife to phone you between 6-10 weeks pregnant to get you booked in ready for your 12 week scan etc

I would explain to them as you've recently transferred to them from another dr that you previously suffered a miscarriage (sorry for that 🥺) and that you need to speak to midwife to confirm that all is well and make sure you get your scan done between the 12-14 weeks

If they are still dragging their feet maybe contact the hospital that you know you'd be going to you can normally get hold of the anti natel ward number from the hospital board and ask to be put through and see if they can help you all the best op with the rest of your pregnancy and congrats Grin

Have you tried ringing your local epau? I went there after multiple miscarriages when I was next pregnant and they gave me an early scan. No referral from the doctor or midwife was needed I referred myself. Just thinking that would put your mind at ease and get the ball rolling so to speak!

I know when you have lots of mcs you feel like you'll never have a baby :-( at least that's how I felt. But my son I am currently feeding is living proof that sometimes a rainbow comes after the heartache. Hope this doesn't sound patronising! Xx

How ridiculous! In my area the GPs give you the midwives number to call up and book in your first appointment yourself although the local hospital takes self referrals so I haven't actually seen a community midwife yet.
I agree about calling the local epu or hospital to see if you can self refer? How far along are you now?

Thanks 2beautifulbabs!

Naptimenevercomes it didn’t sound patronising at all. Thank you for the reassurance :) and yes (WombatStewForTea thanks for your response too) I tried the early pregnancy unit back when I was about 6-7 weeks pregnant I think. They told me just to carry on as normal and get booked in with the midwife. Nobody’s really been much help. I may call them again since my situation has changed a lot! Thank you :)

Can you self refer?

1ce1cebaby · 05/08/2019 19:50

My first appointment wasn’t to 14+1. I had my booking and scan on same day. I hadn’t seen anyone beforehand as I self referred. Think they will def try and see you before 14 weeks. I didn’t get my appointment date to after 12 weeks and was told not to chase one before 12 weeks

yelyahyoung · 05/08/2019 20:56

Mumatoo yes, but I fear it will take the same amount of time! I should wait a bit more for this one I guess.

1ce1cebaby, thanks for sharing your experience. What about the tests and screenings you are supposed to get done by 14 weeks? Did you not have a problem with this? Thanks

No, I had my bloods done at that appointment. Then results at 16 week appointment. I had put my dates in saying I was 14+1 at the apt. But they seemed to ignore that. When I was about to be scanned and they asked dates - they had to get someone else to scan as they look for something diff up to 13+6, so that midwife wasn’t able to scan after 14 weeks. Odd. Seemed to be diff measurements they take dependent on tome. But it wasn’t an issue and someone another midwife was available almost straight away. I’m now 39 weeks and not had any issues. Hopefully you get your date soon. No harm in chasing up though

Can you go on the website for your NHS trust and see if there is the option to self-refer from there? They should have numbers for your community midwife team and also for the antenatal unit at your local hospital - I'd try ringing both and just explain the situation.
I was told you need to have your dating scan/screening tests before 13+6 as the measurements aren't so accurate after this, so they shouldn't be leaving you unseen much longer.
