Best breast pumps to use? Whilst reading reviews is fine, I'd like to know what people on here have actually used and how they found them.

Personally as this is my first baby I have just bought a cheap Hakka pump that lots of people recommended, and Im not bothering with anything fancy until I know I can actually feed x

HeartboxTeddy · 04/08/2019 15:23

I had to pump a lot as I had a huge oversupply. Personally I found the Hakaa pump awful. I had the manual and electric Tommee Tippee pumps too. The manual one was okay but hurt my hand, the electric one was awful, couldn't draw my milk out at all and broke after 2 months of trying to use it. I bit the bullet and brought an Elvie pump which is sooooo expensive! But, it was exactly what I needed and right for me. I love it and have never looked back. However, I would only buy it AFTER I'd established pumping and a supply of milk as it is so pricey!

I had a nuby one I got on sale that worked well, it was an electric one. I also had a manual mam one which was a waist of time

Tini17 · 04/08/2019 17:04

I had an electric Nuby one too and worked fab (we used Nuby bottles so that helped too).
But I agree with waiting to see until you are feeding.

I'm a ftm my OL is 17 days old. I've got a medala swing. Only used it once (so far). Worked really well. Was cheapest on their own website (£90, stead of £140 in boots).
I was very impressed with how easy it was to use and how much I got out in a small amount of time on the first go.

LKH27 · 04/08/2019 17:54

Thanks everyone. I'm only doing research for now, as like a few of you said, won't buy until feeding etc. and what works best for baby.

I would definitely recommend the medela (the yellow one). I tried with a manual one at first with my DS but was just no use and took forever....the medela was given to us on loan from the midwife and it was a life saver so went and bought our own, I'll be using it again with DS2.😊
I must admit I'd love to try the Elvie @HeartboxTeddy just for practicality with 2 children but just so expensive 😳

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 06/08/2019 21:02

Medela swing was fine for me (and the amazon replacement parts are fine for it as you’ll need to get bits and bobs for it). Good idea waiting until you’re established with feeding first.

OnlyLittleMissOrganised · 06/08/2019 22:03

I haven't used it get but I've been given the medela freestyle which is a double breast pump. Looking forward to using it in 10 weeks!

MrsTumbletap · 06/08/2019 22:28

The medala yellow electric one was fantastic. Tried the time tippee manual one and it was hard work.

The medala one was great, popped it on, and watched telly and got loads out, noisy and you feel like a cow being milked but that's is what's it's like Smile

LKH27 · 10/08/2019 06:59

I'll definitely look into these! Thank you all. You are all lifesavers.

@Pinky8383 It was a huge investment for me but so, so worth it. I saved for 5 months to get it (I got the double pump) as I just couldn't sit still long enough to be able to keep on a normal electric pump. I still use it most days (DS is on 12-14 feeds a day Blush) as sometimes a bottle saves me feeling so like I can't ever put DS down. It was worth it 100% for me but the price is a huge factor for trying other pumps first.

In the beginning a Haakaa pump (or similar) can be very helpful, so easy to use. There is one in the Aldi baby event atm.

For "proper" expressing I recommend the Ardo Calypso double electric pump, it's a closed system pump which is much more hygienic than open system pumps (the Medela Swing is open system). It's quiet and efficient too.

NameChange30 · 11/08/2019 15:25

You could also look into hiring a breast pump, there are various schemes.

LKH27 · 11/08/2019 18:13

Ooh I didn't think about hiring one. That's a good idea too. Thank you.

Depends why you want one.

  • Exclusively pumping, go for hospital grade double (spectre, ardo claypso, Medela symphony).
  • Occasional bottle for when you go get a hair cut or an evening out then a hakaa or manual pump will be all you need.
student26 · 11/08/2019 18:20

Love the Haakaa and just bought one for second baby. Stick it on the boob that isn’t being fed from and it catches all the milk drips that would otherwise be wasted. Found it fantastic. £10 on their website at the moment.

fee1234 · 11/08/2019 18:23

I use the Bella baby one. It's so good, I started with the medela swing but it took me 20 mins on each side to empty breasts. I can use both pumps at the same time with this one, and it's a really great price.

I’ve just bought an Elvie that I plan to try in the next few days......I’ll feed back. 👍🏻

FireBloodAndIce · 11/08/2019 18:46

I went for the spectra double pump. I tried a couple of manuals and electrics but the winner was the double pump part plus it didn't sound like a mooing cow like some of the other electrics, it was quiet for night time pumping.

ADTB · 11/08/2019 21:15

I got the BellaBaby double electric breast pump from Amazon. I was a bit hesitant as never heard of the brand before but it was around £30 and the reviews were brilliant.
I’ve used it many times and would recommend it to anyone. Amazing price and does what it’s supposed to do efficiently and comfortably.
