Hi everyone!

Starting to think about nursery furniture - we have a very small square nursery 2m x 2m and I'm not sure how we will fit everything in so hoping for some inspiration! Ideally I'd like a cot, changing table, nursing chair and wardrobe but I'm not sure it can all fit in. I also have two full length shelves running across one wall, we can take them down if necessary but hoping they'll end up being quite useful for storage?

Can anyone share their box room nursery pics for inspiration?

A nursing chair and a changing table are not really necessary when you are tight on space. Good storage will last you a lot longer.

We bought a 120x60 cot which also turns into a toddler bed, this saved some room as cot beds are generally bigger than this. The cot has a drawer at the bottom which is used for bedding. We have a hemnes chest of drawers and put a changing mat on top. At 9 months we tend to change DD on the floor as she's pretty mobile. We also have a small cupboard unit with storage baskets for bath stuff, toys, blankets, muslins etc. Books are on IKEA picture ledges and we have 2 baskets of soft toys. There's also a longer picture ledge above door height which has more soft toys (DD was gifted a lot of teddies!). We have a rocking chair in our room and we store some of DDs clothes which she's still to grow into in an IKEA kallax unit which is in the spare bedroom. This is great for storage and if we didn't already have the cupboard unit I would've put this in DDs room.

I didn't want to buy nursery furniture which we'd only use for a couple of years so bought a chest of drawers and used a unit which we had. IKEA is great for baskets and organisers.

I have an IKEA poang as a nursing chair, our room is small 2.1m x 3m , but I never used it as a nursing chair. I bf on the sofa or on our bed. I do now use it for bed time stories. I think I have some room pictures on my phone I'll set of I can pm them

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 03/08/2019 04:18

As above we bought a compact cot bed. We've also got a standard wardrobe and a chest of drawers we use as a changing table

In our previous small nursery we had a cot, an Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers with the changing mat on top and shelves.

The 3 drawer Hemnes chest is great as the drawers are huge but you can divide them up using Ikea Skubb drawer dividers. Great value and brilliant for small items like socks up to bigger clothing bits like babygrows.

This is exactly what we have, even with the skubbs boxes inside the top two drawers

The only thing I'd say about changing nappies on the floor/bed/over the cot watch out if you have a boy, DS spent many months perfecting the roll and pee, the second you took his nappy off.

StarlightIntheNight · 03/08/2019 10:08

I have a boy and he never did a roll and pee. He also never did the peeing thing once the diaper comes off. I think each child is different. But also, when changing on floor, we always used a changing mat, and I held him so he couldn't roll. He was not a fan of diaper changes, so I used my legs to hold him from rolling while I changed him. Strange I know. I would never change with nothing underneath. So on top of changing mat would be a towel or cover so it can be washed as well.

Tini17 · 03/08/2019 10:58

We had a slightly bigger room with DD. And put a Boori cot bed with a drawer under and a cot top changer on top, a chest of drawers with ikea boxes too.
Changing on the floor was killing my back :(

NewMama2Be · 03/08/2019 11:00

@gingerrogers84 I'm hoping to setup similar, I've got the big 1.5m hemnes drawer set so loads if surface space but was worried the changing mat might slip about a bit if it's not set into a 'table' top type thing with sides?
I take it you dont have that issue though? Good to hear from someone who's got the same setup

pregnantandsuffering · 03/08/2019 11:18

Thanks everyone - these are all some really great ideas. The nursery will remain baby's room for the future, at least until we and DSS feels comfortable moving into our guest room downstairs which I don't anticipate being until he is 16-18 so another 5-7 years. So we need furniture that will grow with LO I suppose - how long do they usually stay in the cot bed once it converts into a bed?

@NewMama2Be we kept the changing mat on the top with nappies and wipes in top drawer until baby was able to roll! Then after that we just stashed it under the drawers and changed him on the floor.
When new baby comes along I will keep his under and get a new one for the top!

We had no problems with slipping etc. But if you're worried you can get fancier rubbery ones that have sides etc!

CmdrCressidaDuck · 03/08/2019 11:55

I no longer have the same house, but when I had a box room nursery it was arranged like this:

-chest of drawers with changing table top, cot, and compact IKEA armchair for feeds and stories all lengthways along one wall.

  • very slim, tall bookcase against the opposite wall for baby books and toys. This could easily be replaced by wall shelving.

That was it. You really don't need a wardrobe for baby clothes as PP said. I kept bedding, toiletries and changing necessities in the drawers under the change mat and had a separate slim, tall chest for clothes.

LittleBearPad · 03/08/2019 12:28

My 4.6 year old is in his 140 x 70 cotbed. It’s looking a bit tight so we’ll buy him a bed in the next six months.

You don’t need a wardrobe. Chests of drawers are more useful. Their clothes are so tiny anyway to begin with anyway and by the time they are bigger you don’t care about creases. Personal tip - never ruin their clothes. Once you start you feel you can’t stop. I never started and life is much better because of it!

You also don’t need a feeding chair - if and bf and never had one. If you bf then in bed is easiest. If you don’t then wherever your bottle stuff is best. We had unopened ready made with us at night for the first feed.

A cot top changer or one on a chest of drawers is good.

Ikea are great for well designed not expensive baby stuff.

Finally to be honest. We didn’t really use the nursery for months after DC1 was born. It really just stored her clothes and changing stuff.

Beeseeinya · 03/08/2019 12:33

Our room is about 170x170 but an L shape. So the solution had been a 120x80 cot with drawer under, and changing mat that goes on top. We got the Mokee cot.
I have a hanging changing station that can clip on side of cot.
Storage is ikea stuva wardrobe and drawer combination unit, plus shelves and hanging canvas bag storage for toys blankets whatever else needs to be handy. Also small built in wardrobe for large items like bouncer, pram bits, toys etc.
Finally an office chair from m&s which was the only comfortable thing I could find under 70x70 ! Most chairs take a lot of depth space and swamp a room. It is comfy enough for night feeds of sitting by the cot.

On the nursing chair point - I was desperate for one before I had my kids. I got a lovely padded rocking one with a rocking footstool.

I couldn’t actually breastfeed in it. The arm height was wrong, couldn’t get us both comfy. Was nice for sitting in rocking/reading/socialising but bloody hopeless for breastfeeding. I fed on the couch with a nursing pillow for support for long feeds (arms get tired supporting weight of even tiny babies) or in bed.

Beeseeinya · 03/08/2019 12:38

One extra pic showing beyond the cot. To the right we have more shelves and have pinned the clip on changing station to the shelf as it felt in the way. The changing mat can be hung on the side of the cot. Theres room on the floor for a washing basket and I have more storage canvas things to add to the wall. I've also told everyone, PLEASE don't buy us loads of gifts. We've had to think really carefully about space as our whole house is only 50sq m Confused

I wish I’d got an antique nursing chair, much better shape for feeding in.

CatalogueUniverse · 03/08/2019 12:39

Love the fox theme!

Beeseeinya · 03/08/2019 12:47

Agree on the chair, arm height is everything! Office chair is great, and easily disguised with a nice throw.
Fox/woodland theme happened when we found the blind in dunelm. Then I found a load of lovely animal stuff in h&m home on sale! Then wall stickers from amazon. Which don't work well on matt paint so beware.
I wasn't going to bother with decorating as the room was so tiny and grim. Then I started and realised it can be done. It's perhaps a bit yellow because I didn't repaint the walls but eh. It's very pleasant to sit in and no longer feels like a cupboard.

pregnantandsuffering · 03/08/2019 12:57

Thanks @Beeseeinya your room is lovely! I've so many ideas I can't wait to get decorating. I'm only 22 weeks so nervous it's too soon but also a compulsive planner.... I love the fox theme too! I think I'm going to skip the chair and maybe get a storage box for bedtime stories that I can sit on, and go with the under shelf hanging space and lots of drawers. We aren't finding out if it's a boy or girl so we are going for more neutral colours in decorating, so the idea of a woodland theme or something like that is so lovely

I started early. All done and I'm 31 weeks. I assumed I would be half dead and immobile in 3rd trimester so have everything done! Plus, it's fun and has helped me with baby bonding a bit.

NCforpictures · 03/08/2019 13:29

Echoing what PPs have said about a slightly smaller corned and using the IKEA hemnes as a changing unit, so much space in there! I've attached some pics from when the room wasn't quite finished but you get the idea, it's about 2m x 2.8m. The walls are blue and the curtains are polka dot (blackout) but it doesn't show up very well
