Maggots in the kitchen bin & pregnant!!

I know how this sounds, but please believe that I am a clean person and always disinfect my bin with every bag change!

I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and really struggling with nausea, so DH has been doing all the cooking and feeding our cats. It turns out he's been putting food waste and empty cat food pouches in the kitchen bin rather than taking them outside like I (and most people) would. Today I discovered that said bin was full of maggots!! I only found this out when I saw two on the floor and did a bit more investigating Sad

I still don't really understand how this happened as surely a fly must have got in the bin Hmm but that's beside the point...

I am really worried that I have been using the bin within the last few hours and had no idea. I know we have to be extra careful when pregnant and I am so worried I might have somehow done some harm. Am I overthinking it? New bin will be purchased tomorrow Blush

Unless you've been eating the maggots or anything else from your bin you'll be fine.

You don't need a new bin either. Boiling water in the bin will kill the maggots and then get your husband to give it a good clean.

Cuppa12345 · 01/08/2019 20:41

What PP said. You'll be fine and just disinfect the bin.

dementedpixie · 01/08/2019 20:42

Why on earth do you need a new bin?? Empty bin, disinfect bin, put new bin liner in. Its very easy to get maggots if a fly gets to food waste. Our outside food waste bin was terribly infested last year

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2019 20:47

We've got them in the wheelie bin, it happens. Just get your bin washed and disinfected. It'll be fine.

mineofuselessinformation · 01/08/2019 20:48

Put the bin outside. Ask DP to deal with it. Give it a good wash out when it's been emptied and carry on using it.
BTW, I'm only telling you to get DP to do it because he caused the problem - it won't cause you any harm if you do it yourself.

Drogosnextwife · 01/08/2019 20:49

Yes you are way over thinking it. Get your dp to empty and lean out the bin, no harm done.

QueenOfThePumpkins · 01/08/2019 20:49

Thanks everyone, this makes me feel a lot better! I thought they might be really stubborn and come back so it would be safer to get a new one. Maybe I can retrieve it from the garden then (after DH has finished with it Grin)

It happens in the summer. I’m sure loads of people’s bins have maggots in frequently, they just don’t realise. There isn’t anything inherently dangerous about maggots.

RoomR0613 · 01/08/2019 20:54

The NHS uses maggots to clean wounds.

Google Larval therapy/ maggot therapy.

They aren't going to hurt you.

RainOrSun · 01/08/2019 20:56

Sorry, not answering the question, but asking g a question...

he's been putting food waste and empty cat food pouches in the kitchen bin rather than taking them outside I put all these things in the kitchen bin. Am I unusual?

dementedpixie · 01/08/2019 20:59

Our food waste goes in the food waste caddy not the kitchen bin. Pouches go in the kitchen bin

QueenOfThePumpkins · 01/08/2019 21:02

Thanks so much :)
I am a very squeamish person so I think I had a bit of an overreaction to seeing maggots in my house! And the fact that some were outside the bin has made me worry where else they went, and how they got out etc. I guess I was thinking along the lines of unwashed fruit and veg being risky (as a fly might have been on it).

@RainOrSun it is quite possible that I'm the unusual one! My mum always had a go at us for putting food waste in the bin when I lived at home, so just conditioned not to do it. I'm not sure what other people do to be honest!

Rainorsun if you are unusual then I am too Smile

Heyha · 01/08/2019 21:04

I was treating a sheep that had maggots when I was 6 months pregnant, I wouldn't worry OP. They are horrible little things though especially if you aren't expecting to see them.

slipperywhensparticus · 01/08/2019 21:07

Sheep are way more dangerous to pregnant women than maggots

They will wiggle off and turn into flies I would buy a swatter

saywhatwhatnow · 01/08/2019 21:08

We've just had them in our outside bin which has a split down the side so the flies can get in. The council are terrible with any bloody bin related queries/requests/questions/payments so who knows when we will get new one! Poor DH had to empty it and take it all to the tip, maggots included, and then bleach the bin to within an inch of its life. It was a bad day.

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/08/2019 21:27

Nothing to worry about; shake them out and then use hot soapy water . They won't harm you although, I agree, aren't very appealing. I put food waste in the kitchen bin and have a bin for peelings to go in the compost and haven't yet ( donkey's years) had maggots so I think your DH was just unlucky in the hot weather.

PixieLumos · 01/08/2019 21:34

Gross, but not uncommon in this hot weather - it only takes one fly. Like someone else said, unless you’ve eaten one I don’t think they can do you any harm Grin

PixieLumos · 01/08/2019 21:36

Also, I put food waste in the kitchen bin - and if I had a cat I would probably put the pouches in there too - is that not what it’s for? Blush

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 02/08/2019 14:08

Also got them in wheelie bin and whilst they’re vile they’re not dangerous. I put food in inside bin but have never had any inside
It’s stupidly hot but a bid of a clean and it’ll be fine

dementedpixie · 02/08/2019 14:30

I've just had to spray fly spray in my outdoor food/ garden waste bin as there were loads of flies in it. Gross!

Heyha · 02/08/2019 17:15

Yeah it was a bit 'needs must' with the sheep @slipperywhensparticus you're not wrong. Luckily a small tame one just needed a trim round her tail before the wrigglers took hold

Slightaggrandising · 02/08/2019 17:19

Flies aren't bacteria. Disinfectant doesn't kill them. Pregnancy doesn't stop you making eye contact with a maggot. Do you have anxiety?

M0RVEN · 02/08/2019 17:22

I’m not a squeamish person at all and too would be freaked out by maggots in the kitchen. No need for such a mean comment @Slightaggrandising
