Help! Whacked bump on kitchen counter - do I need to get checked out?

I’ve tried to call my midwife and the antenatal general line but can’t get through.
I’m 17 weeks and tripped in the kitchen, whacking the side of my bump hard on the edge of the marble work surface.
It really hurt when I did it and I had to double
Over a bit (not completely).
It’s still a bit sore but no red mark or bruise but we’ve had a possible complication flagged so
I am already in a state of high anxiety and feel
like this is tipping me over the edge!
I know you can’t tell me what’s going on in there but wondered if anyone had done the same - trying to gauge how urgent (or non urgent) it is to get in touch with someone.

Thank you

I did exactly the same at about 20 weeks. Bruise and red mark showed straight away. I am rhesus negative blood group so was most concerned about the bump trauma because of that but saw my midwife she used the doppler on me, heard the heartbeat and gave me an anti d injection and I never thought about it again!

She did say that they are very well protected in there but it was the bruising that concerned me.

NotSoThinLizzy · 31/07/2019 20:11

They are pretty well protected in there. If its still quite sore I'd get checked.

Thank you, it felt so hard and painful I can’t help but worry but I guess the baby is still very small and hopefully well protected 😕

Hi op, I fell backwards off a chair, ricocheted into my dd’s bed and then onto the floor at 17 weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️ It caused me to cry out a lot. Spoke to mw on the phone they wanted to establish if there was any pain or bleeding. I had neither do they were satisfied that everything was probably fine. They sent me for a scan 3 or so days later — they couldn’t see me before, but were keen to see me nonetheless.

Obviously do seek professional advice, but hope a little more info might put your mind at rest whilst you’re waiting.

Thanks for sharing.
Mine wasn't anywhere near as bad as that @laurapalmersbodybag [excellent name btw] poor you!
I'm livid with myself.
I managed to get hold of a midwife, and now my midwife is coming tomorrow just for peace of mind. I also spoke to the antenatal unit and they weren't particularly worried as i'm not getting any pains or bleeding

It still feels a bit tender but no bruise or mark still.

Trying not to worry about it now.

Haha, thank you!

Pleased you managed to get someone on the phone. It’s a horrible feeling when you worry like that - there’s nothing like it to whip you up into an anxious frenzy is there?! I’m sure all will be well, but pleased you’re getting checked out.

Best of luck with your pregnancy x

Is your baby moving normally?

Bellasblankexpression · 31/07/2019 20:55

thank you laura Yes, I've been getting myself more and more anxious and then imagining I can feel pains etc when I think it's just a bit of tenderness from the whack.

@joystir59 it's too early for movements - I have an anterior placenta (so extra padding I suppose!) and am only just 17 weeks so don't expect to feel anything for a few more weeks.

I'm also hoping that because I have an anterior placenta [at the front] it's a bit of extra padding...or perhaps something else to get damaged by the knock?!

Going to try and stop thinking about it now! Thanks for the reassurance.

I was 37 weeks with my first and fell head over heals crossing a road. My rather large bump took most, if not all of the impact. I was scraped and grazed right across my tummy but baby was completely fine. I was taken in to hospital and hooked up to heart beat monitor baby. Midwife said then too they are well protected.

Bellasblankexpression · 31/07/2019 22:17

Wow @threecatsownme poor you, that just have been really scary! Glad it was all ok.
I’ve calmed down a bit now

I tripped over the edge of the pavement at 39-ish weeks. I fell on my side really, because I kept thinking I should under no circumstances fall on my tummy. So I fell on my side and grazed my knee. Called my midwife who let me come to her up the road, but she wasn't really concerned. She just got out her doppler and said at least every woman falls over at least once in pregnancy, as your balance is off. Most of the time baby is fine.

Bellasblankexpression · 01/08/2019 07:26

Thank you! Glad you were okay!

Procedure where I am is to report any trauma to stomach and they usually want to observe for 4 hours and check blood. Dangers can be if blood of mum and baby mix and are different blood types. Also placenta abruption. Contact your midwife

Bellasblankexpression · 01/08/2019 07:58

I did @challengeyourreality and the antenatal department and day assessment unit and they checked what my blood type was then said it should be fine as I’m only 17 weeks so baby is small and lots of padding. My midwife is coming today to check heart beat.

That must be a relief for you. And far better it happened now rather than further on.

Bellasblankexpression · 01/08/2019 11:28

it is thanks @challengeyourreality and you're right - the midwife said much better to happen now. She did all the checks, and heard the heart beat and said nothing to worry about but to give her a shout if I start losing fluids or bleeding. So far so good!
Now I just have to hope the bloods I'm getting back soon are clear and maybe I'll be able to relax a bit. :)
