Pregnancy weight worries

Hi- this is my first ever Mumsnet post so that in itself is exciting. I just found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant with my second child. Which is a big surprise as didn't think it would happen in our first month of no birth control and we weren't actively trying but had decided that we would like to have baby no.2. I have an 11 month old baby girl. When I had her my bmi at booking was 25 - but I have found it very difficult to actually lose the baby weight since I had her. I'm not sure why. I was 82 kg the week after she was born and now I am 80kg. This means that my bmi is now 28. I'm just guilt tripping myself that I should have lost the weight or at least more weight before becoming pregnant. I am a curvy type naturally so I do think that my healthy weight is the top of the healthy weight bmi range - 72. All this to say I think I'm asking for people's ideas on how worried I should be if at all. I'm going to try and minimise weight gain in this pregnancy. I think I'm worried when I go to talk to midwives/gps they will think: you should have waited a year before getting pregnant again and you are overweight! I hate having the extra weight and so am pretty confident that I'll lose it eventually.... it was just not really happening fast at all for me after first baby. I'm quite physically fit, run 15k a week and go to the gym. Does any of that make a difference? I'm 33.

You're overthinking this I honestly don't think you need to worry. Just try and eat a healthy varied diet if you can with healthy portion sizes

I had a bmi of 23 at the booking in appt with my first and 29 with my second! It hasn't made a jot of difference. The only thing that is different is the consultant I'm under (due to complications with first birth) booked me in for the GTT due to my bmi but also because my first baby was quite big. So don't worry! I haven't gained anywhere near as much with this pregnancy- just eat healthily and try not to stress and you'll be fine.

Thank you both - you're right I do overthink!

I won't tell you my BMI but it's much higher than yours, however I lost a lot of weight to get here and I am eating healthy. I haven't had the easiest of pregnancies but from what we know our baby boy is absolutely fine. Try not to worry and certainly don't worry about being judged, my midwife has been lovely.

I had a bmi of 33 at my booking appointment it's been fairly easy to maintain that as I've not been as hungry as I was before I got pregnant and the baby has been using my reserves I wouldn't think too much in to it my pregnancy has been text book so far I'm 39 weeks today and not had any major issues normal blood pressure everything coming back as clear and I've been low risk the whole way through you can be low risk as long as your bmi at booking is less than 35 so you don't need to worry about it 😊

I would focus on not gaining so much weight during pregnancy. There is a range for underweight, normal weight and over weight pre pregnancy of healthy weight gain for pregnancy. I am quite slim naturally, but gained 23 kilos each time I was pregnant. Except, the weight naturally came off slowly. I was pregnant again like you when my first was 11 months. I then gained all the weight I lost again with that pregnancy lol. It all came off slowly again and I kept it off for 5 years, until now I am pregnant with my third. I am making a bit of an effort not to put so many kilos, but not sure if it can be avoided. My metabolism slows when I am pregnant. I would definitely at least try and make an effort to eat healthy and exercise, as you do not want to gain even more weight this time, when you didn't lose the one from the first pregnancy, as the second pregnancy it usually takes longer and is more difficult to shift. I am not trying to scare you, but just telling you from experience. First time around the weight came off by 11 months and with not much effort for exercise (just daily walking). Second time around it came off slowly, took more like 15-18 months to all come off and towards the end to shift the last 10lbs I had to actually start going to the gym and work out 3 times a week!

Thank you so much everyone! Let's see how I'll do when morning sickness strikes - that was my downfall last time I think because eating was what made me feel less sick.
