Constant nausea at 6 weeks

Hi there, so I'm 6 weeks pregnant with first bub (very exciting!) But experiencing pretty constant nausea with sporadic vomiting. Today is the first day I've not been able to go in to work with it, but I just feel so horrible ALL the time. Not sure what to do about work and how much I should force myself to go in, but also I have quite a fear of being sick, and it's awful every time I start feeling like it might be on its way. Any advice? I've tried all the usual things - eating little and often, ginger everything, accupressure bands, the lot! I know it's super common and a good sign, but it's so hard to cope with day to day. Anyone else having the same?

Have you tried sipping very cold ice water with fresh lemon juice?

Sezzie87 · 30/07/2019 15:49

I'm on the iced water at the moment, maybe I'll put a dash of lemon on and see how I go. Thanks!

I’m now 14 weeks and have had horrendous nausea since 5/6 weeks. It’s genuinely the hardest thing ive ever had to go through. Constantly feeling sick and vomiting at least 6 times every day.
Talk to your gp. There’s medication you can get. I suffered for such a long time and tried two different types of medication that didn’t work. I’ve now (yesterday) been given a third and it seems to have taken the edge of it. I feel for you as I know how hard it is.
Good luck.

It’s horrible & it feels like an absolute lifetime when you are early pregnant! I could have written your post bar I’m already on meds as the sickness hit me horribly at 6 weeks & couldn’t keep anything down Sad They’ve stopped vomiting mostly which is obviously quite a relief but the nausea is frankly awful, I feel on the edge of throwing up all day. I’m struggling to function.

If it gets too much, there are different levels of anti-sickness you can safely take. It’s a personal choice, worth doing some reading around (don’t just read the scare-mongering) & weighing up the best thing for you. I’d be in hospital constantly if I didn’t take medication. It’s safer for me & baby. I took it last time too & I’m currently sat cuddling my lovely, smart, funny little two year old Smile

I feel for you OP, I was the same - but unfortunately nothing is going to make much of a difference (nothing did for me anyway - and it baffles me that in this day and age women are still expected to just put up with this and no effective and safe medication has been discovered to relieve this problem!) Distraction is key I think - as tempting as it is to lie in bed and hide away, getting fresh air and keeping busy will feel better. Hope it eases off soon!

I feel for you too. I've been having this since week 5-6 and I'm 14 weeks now. My life has basically stopped. I've been signed off sick for ages from work and have tried 4 or 5 anti nausea drugs from the GP- nothing has helped.

Some days are better than others at this point, which I hope might be a sign of it leaving me? But I don't know.

They do say it should mean your pregnancy is healthy, so if that's true, that's a silver lining right there.

I have pregnancy pop drops - they do actually help. I would try them, or just boiled sweets.

Eating little and often, Bla Bla... but I still get horrendous sickness after I eat. No matter how little I eat really.

I try to eat what I feel like eating and never force anything I don't feel like eating. I think that helps. Basically just eat bland food and carbs- no meat.

I also drink full fat coke / sugary drinks. I know- very healthy. But I find it can take the edge off sometimes. I don't drink more than one can per day.

Other than that - I actually find being out and about makes it worse. I can't really drive long distances as I feel super sick and need to pull over. So I just stay in bed at home most days. It's been about 8 weeks of this. It's pretty boring !

Try the pregnancy pop sweets. And see your GP for medication as soon as possible to get going. Get sea sickness bands as well.

Hello. I'm 9 weeks tomorrow and week six was my absolute worst week. Week 7 was tiny bit better. Week 8 started off good and now it's kicked back in. Feeling sick all day long. Hungry but all foods are making me feel horrible. it's really horrid but I'm taking comfort in the strong symptoms xxxx

Sezzie87 · 30/07/2019 19:59

Aw thanks for all your posts, I'm so sorry for those of you who are having the same trouble, but it's nice to know I'm not alone! I've been to the GP this eve and he's given me a prescription for cyclizine which does seem to have taken the edge off it, although not as much as I'd hoped at this stage! But I'm told it passes... I'm also quite pleased though because we miscarried in March at 5 weeks with no pregnancy symptoms at all, and this one does seem to appear healthy at the moment!! Framingham2, what's a pregnancy pop drop and where can I get some? They sound fab... 😁

I'm 17+5 and I've been suffering bad nausea since week 7 I drink twinings ginger and lemon and it helps a lot, like you I fear throwing up esp when I've eaten, so I'm scared to eat, I snack in fresh fruit which also helps, I've got horrible growing pains and nausea at the minute and it's making me feel so down. Congratulations by the way xx

Framlingham2 · 30/07/2019 20:06

Sezzie87 they're actually called preggie pop drops! I got them from amazon. I've read that even hard boiled sweets help though, but I just bought one pack to give it a go and then ordered 4 more. I am sick of them too.. but I do occasionally have one a couple of times a day and it helps with the nausea. They're very sour hard boiled sweets. Good luck to you, I hope you feel better ASAP!

I had this...for my entire pregnancy. I had to have 6 months off sick and take maternity leave 11 weeks early. Stopped as soon as baby born.If yours persists, tell your doc you need ondansetron. Its expensive but it helps with nausea and actually stops the vomiting. You need to keep fluids down!

snowy0wl · 30/07/2019 20:11

Hi @Sezzie87. It hit me at 6 weeks too! I went off all food and drink and experienced a constant feeling of nausea. It was the worst! I found that lots of rest/sleep was the only way for me to get through it. Do you have the option to work from home? In terms of eating - listen to what your body wants. At one point I was only eating plain rice, peaches and plain chicken sandwiches. Try to drink lots of fluid so that you don't dehydrate.

It may not be any consolation at the moment, but the nausea will pass. There is light at the end of the tunnel. At around 16 weeks the nausea left me and I was back to eating and drinking most plain food again. Such a relief!

Just as a side note, don't be too alarmed if you find you lose weight during this period. Your midwife will be able to advise if you are very concerned. Once your appetite is back you should find that you gain weight again.

Hope you feel better soon. xx

Agree with Framingham about full fat Coke; the doc said it saved me! I was allowed off the drip when i found i could keep (most of) the Coke down. 2-3 litres a day 😮

barnyb · 30/07/2019 21:37

@Framlingham2 I get really bad travel sickness too! I can't believe your still having it at 14 weeks! I was hoping it would go by 12/13 weeks 😵😵😵😫
