Shoulder Dystocia and subsequent births

I am 13 weeks pregnant and have an appointment with the consultant in a few weeks where I am hoping to discuss this, but I am just looking for people's experiences in the antenatal care they received and the actual birth itself.

I had this with my son, he was only 8lb 9oz so not huge but I am scared of this happening again.

Hey @tisonlymeagain
sorry you havnt had more experiences on this,I commented with my experience on your other post so not sure if you saw it or found it very helpful? but Its not very common 1 in 150 births so thats probably why you havnt received many replies, if you don't hear back from anyone else then I'm happy to help/talk/advise where I can 😊 I'm currently 22wks on my 4th pregnancy but had a shoulder dystocia labour with my 2nd child who is now 5yrs old.

My DS2 was born with shoulder dystocia. He was 9lbs 2oz. After he was born (and it was a mission to get him out) the midwife told me I'd need a section for any subsequent births and that's what happened. My consultant was more than reluctant to allow me to labour and deliver naturally in case it happened again.

I don’t have any experience myself but I know a friend of mine had a section for her 2nd baby after shoulder dystocia with the 1st.

I had this with DS1, nobody actually told me that's what it was (obviously I knew he was stuck for some time but didn't know there was an actual term for it). I saw a consultant when I was pregnant with DS2 and he was trying to steer me towards a vaginal delivery - I actually had to ask him to read my previous birth notes, as he hadn't even glanced at them. That's when I discovered it was actually SD, consultant then advised I go for an elective CS. I also had a third degree tear which added to the need for a CS but even without that he said he would advise me to go for a CS.

I saw a different consultant when I was a bit further along and she did try to steer me toward a vaginal delivery - she knew there had been SD but tried to tell me I would closely monitored in case it happened again.

I ended up with a CS as that's what I felt was best in my circumstances and I pushed back on the second consultant. I'm pleased I didn't see her first as I feel I would have been swayed by her whereas the first consultant once he read the notes told me he really would not advise me to have a vaginal birth again.

I think my first birth was fairly mishandled and this was apparent in the notes, the first consultant actually came and found me while I was waiting for the lift to reiterate he really wouldn't advise a vaginal birth again.

Anyway, I'm waffling (can you tell I'm still not over DS1's birth?!). Other than the two consultant appointments to discuss a CS there were no differences between my actual care prior to birth of any children post DS1. I did have very positive C-Section experiences and am pleased I didn't attempt a vaginal birth.
